What I saw today.

Whilst in my brief sojourn in AG today I witnessed the following:

A pin stripe suited man was striding around the store closely followed by a male assistant who was clutching a clipboard. They had an AG staff member in their party. I thought nothing of it at first.

When I got to the counter, the very same suited man plus entourage were at the till next to me.

He must have a game of golf in the very near future and evidently had never played the game before as he asked "What else do I need?". His assistant was also explaining the difference between golf balls.

He was clearly loaded as he was paying for a TaylorMade tour bag, a TaylorMade white Superfast driver and fairway wood, a pair of FootJoy Icons, a set of irons (I didn't see these but they were discussing them),a trolley and was sorting out balls, etc.

It got me wondering what I'd buy if I was given an AG 'super credit'

and

I feel very sorry for the group stuck behind him when he makes his 1st tee debut.

Obviously for this client the Nicklaus gear stayed on the racks

We had one not long ago at the range. All the gear both in his bag and on his back. Right down to one of those peak things on his head. He struted in as though he had just won the open. Then missed every ball he put down, if he did hit one it went anywhere. Nearly every one stopped to watch it was that funny.

A few weeks ago my playing partner and myself went to local course pro shop. He tried totally standard g15 irons and hybird on the range. Spoke to the pro about what driver. Pro gave him the K15 to try. Got on really well with them all. He has wanted ping gear for years and had a bit of a tax rebate so decided to treat himself. Wanted ping cart bag too. All in all there was a grand worth of stuff so he asked for best price. Pro said he would have to speak to his boss and his boss would ring him the day after. Long story short my pal wanted to buy it there and then so we went to local AG and bought all the gear he tested. They gave a pretty decent discount and some balls. The head pro never called him back either.

I think if I had that kind of money, I'd buy myself a new shirt.....that's all. Got everything I need in my bag, a lot of it second hand but still good quality (mostly Ping) and I bet I could smoke this guy off the course with all his brand new Taylormade gear and wallet full of cash. Heck, give me a kids set of plastic clubs and I'll beat him!

Does Nescafe Shake mean anything on this forum? If it does then he's one of them!

Although, I would like to treat myself (and am really thinking about it) to a set of G20's when they are out next month.....wife is going to lop my nuts off and smash them down the garden with my 7 iron though.....worth it?? Probably!

Don't see anything wrong with this, the guy obviously has the cash so why not buy the best.

We all buy what we can afford, so if that's brand new top of the range kit or second hand clubs then fair enough.

There will be folk on here who drive brand new Merc's or Jaguar's because they can afford to, but they don't necessarily need it, a second hand car will do a similar job.

My only issue would be if the AG staff were fobbing him off with top of the range gear despite knowing he is a beginner. I'm all for making a buck but there has to be a degree of customer service in that too and letting him just buy stuff because he had the cash isn't it

Have you never been in a shop and thought "what the heck, I want to start with the best" rather than start with entry level and work ones way up? And which in any case is the cheaper way to do it!

I can't see why any one should think any less of him because he is kitting himself out with decent stuff. It's just jealousy.

Someone will get a brilliant bargain when he gets rid of it though.

Also hope they sold him lots of balls.

If the guy wants to buy a load of TM and can afford it, its his choice and his business.

If he chooses to buy at AG and gets taken for a mug, see previous comment.

Buying equipment is about a lot more than deciding what shiny kit to choose. The location you choose to buy and the advice you get is crucial. If you are actually on Tour, the golf company will give you a Tour bag. Otherwise you don't need one unless you need the extra space to carry your enormous ego.
