Taking a lead from Thurstwest's thread, what do you think your HC would be if you didn't practice?, I guess this is a question about natural ability.

Base the assumption that you only play twice per month. For myself I would put myself as a 24 handicapper, what would you be?

In all honesty, if I could only play every other week I possibly wouldn't bother so I wouldn't have a handicap at all....!!

An interesting question, I practice loads but don't seem to get any better. I've just invested in a series of lessons with my pro and hopefully he can give me a structured practice plan as I believe just whacking balls on the range doesn't really accomplish a lot. I joined my club 2 years ago and had a handicap of 25 which went down to 18 in 6 months but has remained there ever since. The amount of time I dedicate to practicing should see that coming down but I seem to have hit some kind of wall. One thing I do need to do is always hit a few before venturing out on the course as my scores over the first few holes are way too high if I start 'cold'.

For it to be about natural ability you would have to play isolation of others via books magazines video TV and of course - on course.

We all have multiple inputs to our game, whatever constitutes practice for you is just another.

I don't practice at all and got to 6 with no lessons and no practice. But I played loads and copied stuff out of Hogan's book. Not sure I have any real natural ability at the game - I've just developed an ability from starting at a young age. Now what could I have been if I HAD practiced and had lessons early on :)

I play once a week... no practice. Last round I shot a +12.

A lot worse, I both love and need my range and putting green time.

Working hard at the range won my a scratch cup, I was down there every other weekend for about 4 hours and a couple of nights. Wasn't a club member so hardly played on a course. Didn't hurt though as when I did I played well.

I think with practice I'm heading for single figs, without its heading for 20!

Most years, until last year, I played about 50 times a year with virtually no practice. Played comfortably off 4-5-6. Last year played less than half that and really struggled, climbing from 4.4 to 6.0.

Back playing the usual amount of games, and looking like getting back to 5.

However, the practice time and rounds put in years ago was huge. The swing is fairly well known by me and a little practice, a doz balls on the range, usually irons out the wrinkles fairly quickly.

Easy to answer this one, because my current handicap is the one that I get by not putting in any practice time at the range. There was a big plan for this year (actually very similar to last year's plan), to get to the range on a regular basis and to take lessons. It worked very well for the first month or two of the season and I dropped two shots off the handicap, but then work went all manic on me again and my wife took on a job that involves even worse hours. Practice time hasn't been very high on the agenda since then, think I may need to accept (yet again) that this isn't the season to get the handicap tumbling.

I rarely practice that's why I'm not getting any better!!

18 is probably about right.

I think I'll start a " post only in here if you practised this week" as a motivation thread.

I hardly practice and play 2-3 times per month. So your OP almost describes me. I play off 11.

However, before my daughter I used to practice more and got down from 18 to 11.
Without the practice I did before and just playing I reckon I'd be a couple of shots worse so let's say 13-14.

Never been higher than 18 since I started playing again as an adult (played a bit as a junior off a higher handicap).

Fall into the don't really practice category despite having the best intentions of doing so at the beginning of each new season.

However my short game, being kind to it, is less than convincing and only a few weeks ago I spent an hour with my 60* lob wedge on the chipping green.

Low and behold I got a .8 cut last week, so...probably a lesson to be learnt by me there.

I don't really practice and I don't play every week so I'd probably stay where I am.

Practice does help I think, especially if there's something specific you're working on, but it's effect is probably overrated. I often play just as good after a few weeks layoff as when using all the time available. The thing I miss most of all is course practice, or just playing - nothing compares.
