Went to the range last night and took my whole bag and hit a few balls with each club , feeling like i need a more controlled and organised practice routine but dont know where to start , do you guys take all your clubs / work on something specific / or just whack balls into the ether ?

Never just whack balls. If I'm at the practice ground then I usually have 3 or 4 clubs and have a specific routine to work on (distance checking, short chips/pitches etc).
I never take the whole bag as it just means that I will start messing about :)
Have a clear idea of what you want to work on and figure out the best way to do it, for example say you want to work on your short game, pick a few targets at different distances and just work on hitting those targets.

I only ever go to the range to work on something specific.

My track has excellent short game practice facilities so I only go to the range to work on anything over 120yards.

Last time I went it was to work on my approach play from around the 150 Yard mark so took 3 mid irons and that was it.

Wacking balls doesn't really gain anything..... Apart from making you sweat

SWEATING AND MESSING ABOUT

a good description of last nights "practice session"

Must take less clubs and have a more focused approach seems to be the order of the day

Cheers guys

If I have to go to the range I take everything that's in my bag.
If I have to cart 3 or 4 clubs + glove in, I might as well take the whole bag...

Might not use them all though

I don't go an hit balls that often if i'm honest.

I have a 6 iron with the swinggyde attached and just swing that on an old back door mat with a chalk mark on it.

far less effort and can do a couple of mins a day.

I was wondering about setting up a net so i can hit a few balls a day , trouble with going to the range is i have to lug everything down there and then because of that i feel like i must hit 150 balls to make it worth the journey

I personally take the lot, the driving range i use have loads of water hazards from 40 yards out, and i like to try different shot at the range. And i like to check on all my distances. I just wish we played off grass, and i would be there more often.

I take the lot, but generally only use:

Driver
either 3 or 4 iron
5 iron
7 iron (warm up only)
either 8 or 9 iron
either SW or LW

I used to think that hitting wedges at the range is a waste of time, but over the last couple of months have hit entire buckets practicing 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 wedges to targets and have noticed huge improvement on the course with all wedges in terms of distance control and accuracy - I used to be prone to pushing pulling wedges and missing greens with them occasionally.

Neither of my ranges allows bags.

(like I'm going to steal 50 yellow brick balls?)

I tend to take

PW, 7 iron, 7 iron with moulded grip, 4 iron, 5 wood and Driver.

Most of my drills and exercises are with 7 iron. I tend just to go up and down with the clubs...a bit like my head. :(

I usually have three types of range sessions.

1. After work, stressful day = Bashing driver and wedges, generally having fun and not caring about anything at all.

2. The whole set and working my way through the bag = playing a pretend course or aiming at "fairways" and "greens" with some scoring games.

3. Take a few clubs up, wood/mid iron/short iron = drills and practice, usually not scored but working on feeling.

I am a person who believes golf is fun and there is no harm in going to the range to have fun if you are confident in your swing or need to blow off some steam

I am back having lessons so if I am up the range all I take is my 6 iron to work on what I have been taught. Sometimes take a fairway wood as well but nothing more.

At the moment, if the weather is good enough to go to the practice ground then it is good enough to play 9 holes so I tend to do that.

I take my whole bag and go through it in a few make believe game situations.

If I fluff anything or I'm not happy with any particular shots I keep those clubs out and then work on them longer afterwards.

I thinks its good to go from a wood to a 7 iron or a 5 iron to a wedge rather than go through a bag in number order as that's unrealistic.
