What books are you reading just now

Just started A Clash of Kings, second in the A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones to you TV only guys). Also making quick work of Alex Ferguson's autobiography and after I've finished that I'll be reading Tyler Hamilton's The Secret Race about doping in cycling.

was bought the George RR Martin books for my Christmas after loving the TV series.

Weird having got into film tv before the books. Normally the other way around.

Jut finished "the Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet" by David Mitchell, which was a cracker.

Next purchase will be "Bloods a Rover" by James Ellroy. Love the first two books in this trilogy (American Tabloid and The cold Six Thousand") so hope this will finished them off nicely

Best book i read last year was "Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee" about how the West was really won.

Anyone read it?

Cant recommend it enough if you are into history and the like

HID bought me a Kindle Fire HDX for Christmas and have downloaded a few books, why I never got one of these wonderful bits of kit before i will never know.

Recently read Steve Berrys the Amber room which was thoroughly enjoyable. Also just yesterday finished the Game of Throne series of books absolutely superb.

Currently reading a Book called Vatican Knights, only just started it and so far is decent enough. Also got the JK Rowling thriller to read can't for life of me remember the name of it or under what alias she wrote it but its meant to be decent.

Then its onto Discworld Books I've never read one of them but now I have the urge to give them a go. Can't read Jack Reacher anymore as all I see is Tom Cruise and it doesn't fit the image in the books.

Now I have my Kindle I have even more ability to read as I love to but don't have to worry about the room in house to place all my paperbacks.

It makes me sad to think that so many houses have no books in them. The first thing we did when we moved into our house was get a floor to ceiling bookcase built in the living room. I might have to get a Kindle, though, as there's no more room for new books.

I'm currently reading A Possible Life by Sebastian Faulks, who is a brilliant writer IMO. I have Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee in the bookcase - I've had it for ages and I've never got round to it. Might have to dust it off next, on this recommendation, though I got a bunch of books for Christmas that I need to work through too.

I have quite a good system as I buy most of my books at charity shops.
The ones I have read I then take down to my BIL who has a book stall for the Mountbatten Hospice in his beach cafe.
He has raised nearly £30k now.
Never too many books in my house as they are recycled briskly.
My wife has yet to read one book in her adult life, she is 80% through one she started in September just to say that she has read a book.

I read infrequently, but am halfway through I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes, very good so far. Has anyone else read this and what were your thoughts ?

What is everyone else reading?

I read 400 pages of Pilgrim, then gave up bitterly disappointed. For me it was full of cliches and cheesy plot cliff hangers. The lead character I did not like in the slightest. Enjoy it won't you?

I'm halfway through James Clavell's "Shogun" at the moment, loving it. Very captivating read.

That is a good system, and it's one I'd like to emulate, but I struggle to give books away. I love having them on the shelves and being able to go back to them. To be honest, I like just being able to look at them.

£30k for charity is a persuasive argument against my narcissism, though

I think the word you're looking for is sublime.
Black Swan Green by DM is a modern day classic, a pure joy to read.

Sublime is probably the better word for it.

It is a rare book that has you on the brink of tears in the very first chapter.........

On a side note. The cover art is something of real beauty

I know you cant judge a book by its cover, but i do concede it was what drew me to buy the book in the first place.

A book thread???? I'm shocked and stunned. I read a lot... At the moment though Christopher Brookmyre - Pandaemonium. Like all of Brookmyres it's very good. Just finished Fergies autobiography... what a falsely hyped load of guff!

Yes, we can be a surprising lot here at times

Read some of Brookmyres early stuff, but haven't picked up one for a while, maybe give him another go.

Previous book finished was Brave New World - Aldous Huxley. Just about to finish The Magician - Somerset Maugham, and just started A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway. I buy most if not all of my books from my local Oxfam. But must get into the habit of getting rid of some as I have far too many - but I just have never thrown or given away books - I love them.

As mentioned - a house without books is an empty house. I'm not sure how eBooks can ever replace physical presence - and I think that physical presence in a house is important and as a growing environment for children a house without books is the poorer for it. But that's just me and another discussion.

No, it's not just you.

....................... and I don't even have a retriever!

Both interesting books though.

Ive gone through the song of ice and fire series. Just finished Terry Goodkinds Sword of truth series and halfway through the second omnibus of Malus Darkblade tales of Warhammer at the moment.

Any recommendations are gratefully recieved.

Just finished 'The Invisible Man' by H.G. Wells. There are some great free classics to download if you have a kindle or e-reader.

Siren, how did the newer books go after Confessor in this series, as that was the last book I read. I found them to be getting a bit preachy near the end and a bit of a struggle. Is it worth reading from Omen Machine onwards?

If you like your Fantasy books 'Blood Song' by Anthony Ryan first book of a new author. Eagerly awaiting book 2.
Also Peter V Brett's Demon series first book is 'The Painted Man' I'm eagerly waiting the fourth book in this series.

I'm struggling through the last book of The Left Hand of God. Just need to get through it so I can try out David Dalgish book.
