VW Polo 1.2 2013 Plate Timing Chain

That’s how much it’s worth if you want to sell it. How much it’s worth to you and your daughter is another matter.
This is so true. If it is a car you have had for a while you know the history of it. If you were replacing it, you do not know the next car and what would you be spending to replace it? Sometimes you get rid but sometimes it is best to keep hold.

My advice is get it done or sell it as the chain guides will break (the sound you hear is the chain hitting them) and the pieces of plastic could block the sump and result in the engine getting destroyed through lack of oil.

80k isn't too bad on a VW engine and if you're going to keep it for another few years get it done. Keep the invoice because when you sell it you'll get more for one that's had the chain done.

No…it’s just very ‘rattly’ on engine startup. Running seems fine…though I’m no expert on what is and isn’t how it should be.
Timing chains often have a tensioner that operates by oil pressure. Once the engine is warm and the oil has thinned the chain tensioner does it's job and tightens the chain.
As previously mentioned see if there is anyone in the Club who are mechanics and ask their advice. If it doesn't sound bad once you raise the engine revolutions a little then it's probably ok.

At the price you said you were quoted, I would probably get it done so the car can be passed onto your daughter.
Going back to you thinking about an XC40, think also Toyota or Lexus. As long as you have the car serviced each year with their main dealers, you get a years full warranty on the car up to a maximum of 10 yrs.
That has to be a serious consideration. RAV4 hybrid or smallish Lexus hybird..both SUV do easier to get in and out.

Tiny bit of a faff but Toyota I used to get the service done independently then get them to do a battery check for £50 , worked out cheaper and still kept the warranty
