Played tonight in a 2nd round Club Matchplay against the great lad I beat in last years final, and what a game.

He plays off 5, so was giving me 5, and by his own standards didnt start well, and I'm 5 up, yes 5 up, at the turn.

SI 1 10th, par 4 to go 6 up
At this point, I must admit I did let a little thought creep in that this could be all over after 12, but banished the thought quickly !

Halved 11, and both pushed our tee shots on tricky 12th, I get on the green and 2 putt before he declares that he 'fancies this one' from 15', and holes it ! Turning point.

He leaves his Tee shot just off the front of the green on next, Par 3 again, whilst I'm sat 12" away. Drains his chip for a 2, and a win.........I'm now 4 up with 5 to play.

Halves on Par4 14th.......Dormie.

Par4 15th,.......he's in trouble off the tee, chips out, and then knocks it on, just inside my 2nd to green.
Me to play, .....nudge it up but not quite close enough to gimme and win,......and he drains his from 25' !! Cue me to miss a 4 footer, and its dormie 3.

Par4 16th.......and I'm on a shot, he gets up and down for a 4 from an impossible position,.......dormie 2.

par3 17th........he hits a great 5iron to 15' away. I'm in Bunker, but play a great shot to 4',.......and then he drains his birdie putt........Dormie 1

18th.......I fail to get up & down for my par,......he holes a pressure putt for his........all square after 18

19th - Both in trees .....blah blah......he makes 4....I dont. I lose.

Funny though.......despite losing........I didnt play bad........he played incredibly well from 11th on....... and we had some great banter and a more pleasant night's golf you couldnt ask for......surely thats what its all about eh ??

Sure....I lost,....I'm out,........but what a super game we had. Love games like that.

How refreshing to read a post like this :) Too often when somebody doesn`t get the desired result all we hear is "thinking of giving up" or words like that.

Fantastic attitude and spirit to play our wonderful game this way, and glad someone can appreciate an opponents good play and fightback.

I am sorry you didn`t hold on for the win, but thank you for your post.

Sounds like a right rollercoaster of a game!!
Fully understand how you feel.
I've said many times.....I would much rather play well and lose than play badly and win.
You can hold your head high and I expect he will be telling his friends for weeks what a great game you had.
Bad luck, but as posted above...a great read
;)
