Wedge chewing up balls

Hi

I have been using prov1 X lately and am really enjoying them. Shot a new PB of 78 at the manor house castle coombe today:lol:

The last two rounds I have used them my 60* has put a scag on the ball both times whilst I have been hitting out of the bunker. There is a small stone mark in the middle of my wedge could this be doing it? Or are the balls known to be soft?

Will a scag effect the ball in play? It didn't seem to today but I'm sure it hindering the performance in a way.

To the OP.....

it could be the scag mark that is ripping the balls. Do you have other clubs of the same type, in different lofts?

Pro V1's are not the most durable ball available mind you

Pro V's aren't overly durable but then again not many premium balls are. There not built specifically for that. A mark on the face or even new grooves will leave marks especially out of bunkers

I find bunker play often marks up golf balls. Sand is pretty abrasive stuff.

Paths are worse.

Why do trees ruin golf balls? Wood is soft.

I hate trees. They are evil.

I have 3 wedges. 52* 56* 60*

Brand new balls both times. I have noticed it has been immediately after hitting out of a bunker. I use my 60* often and it only seems to happen when I have the face of the club almost horizontal to help me get out of the sand. I think it could be the mark on my wedge that is doing it. Just thought I would ask for other peoples opinions on the ball first.

If you have a raised chip in your wedge, you could file it flat, or gently tap it flat with a hammer. I'd go for the hammer. It does less damage to the rest of the club face. Go easy though. It doesn't take much, wedges are soft.

It's more of a cut across two grooves.

Do the scuffs affect the flight of the ball? It's annoying having a ball that is scuffed after a few holes. Especially as there £3.50 a pop!

Don't really see why this is necessary - perfectly obvious what is meant in the OP......

Marks will affect the ball though a lot will depend on the severity of the scar. Little chips coming off the side of the ball might cause it to fly in an unpredictable manner through aerodynamic drag but ultimately, at my level at least, I have bigger things to worry about with my game ha ha ha!!

Given that the word has only been used 3 times in 7 years of posts on these forums, and in the context of heroin use each time, the evidence doesn't seem to support that view - however, enough of the language use and back to balls...

The nature of the cover will be one factor in your equation, and the ProV's are little different to many other balls in that regard. In fact the only reasonable generalisation is that the more you pay for a ball the more it's likely to mark up more easily!

In theory any mark that physically affects the balls surface will have an impact on it's performance - in practice you won't notice. However, for many people it will have a psychological impact - if you are one then change it.

Unless the damage to your wedge face is proud it is unlikely to be the cause; however from a bunker it may catch and focus sand in a manner that caused this. On balance unlikely as the groves will always do that anyway.

I doubt I have a reproducible enough game to be affected by marks on the ball, and certainly I've never seen a marked ball perform any different to a brand new one. I generally change when it looks dull, or if it has a mark big enough to annoy me with dirt.

Generally the £3.50 a ball thing can be sorted quite quickly by swapping from prov1

Btw. I still don't know what that word actually means ... Is it a hole? In it a scuff ? Is it a raised mark? A cut ?

Perhaps scag is a bristolian thing. In context I would say I have scaged my jumper if I had caught it on barbed wire.
Its a shame I have had more comments on my use if English compared to answers to my question.

I suppose it's more psychological than effecting my game.

I did that wednesday in a bunker with my 56 w, same ball , I did catch more off the ball then i wanted and there was a mark , more down to a bad shot I say ..............EYG
