Was Rooneys goal really THAT good?

All the cynics that call goals like that flukes only ever seem to spout that when its an Englishman that scores it.

Er. Wrong! As much a fluke as Rosicky's one against Tottenham imo.

My measure of 'fluke' is how likely it would be to be able to repeat. In both those cases, very low!

Doesn't actually detract from it/them being a 'remarkable' goal, or 'great strike' though, just not up there in my list of 'great' goals.

Gazza's for England (above), Maradona's (Second) against them, or Giggs's 99 FA Cup Semi against Arsenal (tarnished slightly by then howing his hairy chest - why do they do that!) are my kind of 'great' goals!

Yup, it was that good.

Take a ball to a pitch on the angle just inside the half - it's about 55yds. Now try to score, no matter how - hardly any of us would hit the target especially on our first go.
Now face away from the goal, throw the ball over your shoulder, one bounce and hit it on the volley - the percentage of us that would be able to reach = very low, percentage on target = even lower.

These guys are good, bloody good - it's why people watch.

£300k doesn't even come in to it, and is a poor argument.

My comment was tongue in cheek about the £300k

Just because it's been done before doesn't mean it's not great goal! I've seen charlie Adam and Richie wellens do something similar!

Also messi runs from the half way line to score isn't less of a genius goal because maradona did it in 86!

Best overhead kick ever was by Trevor Sinclair, doesn't make it crap because pele did it 40 years ago!

I don't think anyone has called it "crap"

It's a good goal

I think it was a great goal. A typical Rooneyesque type of goal!

Didn't Alonso score one similar when playing for Liverpool?

But even the great Pele didn't manage it, during the 1970 World Cup for Brazil!

And can any of the oldies on here remember what could have been the greatest goal ever, by Pele? Again, in the '70 World Cup.

It went something like this: a ball is whipped through to him diagonally, he runs across the goalie at breakneck speed, completely confusing said goalie, running momentarily in the opposite direction to the ball, then changes direction and catches up with the ball and unleashes a shot, as he is still running, towards the empty goal, with the keeper absolutely stranded wondering what the heck was going on! Unfortunately it just shaved the far post. But it was fantastic to watch - sheer genius!

I wonder if there is a Utube clip somewhere that somebody can find and put up. (Sorry, I don't know how to post a link)

Yeah Alonso did it.... twice. Again one time the keeper got all in a flap....and another that was a good strike.

lovely foul and hoof!

he even said in his interview that he has tried it numerous times in his career. large slice of luck that it actually went in. its a speculative effort.

the keeper completely lost his bearings. he should have saved it.

Thanks for that Jack, also nice to remember the other genius, Tostao, what an exquisite footballer he was.

Brazil - aka 1970 - now that was football - how it should be played - never has been, and ever will be equalled!!

Watch le Tissiers top 100. He scored 4 "gazza" goals plus many better!

I think Rooney's goal was a very good goal. I think what can slightly diminish a "half-way line" goal is what a keeper does. The West ham keeper went AWOl for this one so slightly detracts from it. If he would have calmly got into position he could have easily saved it.

Same with the Alonso goal against Newcastle. If Harper hadn't have slipped would have looked a better goal.

Tettey's goal for Norwich was better IMHO.
