Was Rooneys goal really THAT good?

Seems to me that the media are going crazy over his half way line goal at the weekend.

Undoubtedly it was good vision to spot the keeper off his line, but in the scheme of things it was a hoof from a good 4-5 yards inside the half and the keeper made an absolute hash of getting back. Yes it was a good goal, but not exactly a wonder strike IMO, for me Beckhams goal (that they keep comparing it to) was the much better goal.

Just all seems a bit OTT.

I agree, good goal but not great. It's not even Rooney's best goal for UTD IMO. The bicycle kick V City was much better.

Rooney's was a great strike, but it was taken on the volley and didn't seem like it was too far away from bouncing over the bar. Still a brilliant goal though.

Beckham's was from the floor with an "only just moving" ball and (one of the things that shows how hard/well he had to kick it) it hits the back of the net before the floor.

Beckham's was better IMO.

Going to be brutally honest....that goal really winds me up again as a wonder strike. He SHINS it into the top corner by accident.....

I would have said it was harder to control on the volley than Beckham's static ball on the ground?

Much easier to hit a volley from there than off the floor. The ball is in motion and sat up which is so much easier to get it all the way to the goal. Rooneys was still a great goal though.

Beckhams was better as he controlled the trajectory perfectly.

It's harder to kick a bouncing ball 60 yards than an almost stationary ball imo and keep it within the dimensions of a goal. Both excellent efforts though!

Try it on a pitch, you'll have more chance hitting the net (well, getting close anyway) with a volley than from what, 5 or 10 yards further back and off the floor. That's not to take away from Rooney the skill it took to hit it from there with the outside of his boot and even get it on target.

Yeah that, obviously he went for it but shinned it, re the goal v west ham, I thought he was clearing his line an hoofin it clear.

You definitely won't.Why do you think they don't flick free kicks up for volleys more often?Or the cross bar challenge on that Saturday morning programme?Controlling a volley is harder than a ball on the ground.

You're both right!

More chance of making the distance with a volley but less chance of hitting it on target!

Doesn't change the fact that both goalies should have saved them though! :)

The skill in Rooney's goal was to get the trajectory right so it bounced into the net rather than over the bar and its far more difficult to do that on the volley

Who cares!

Both 'flukes' like a hole in one is. But will certainly be 'goal of the month'!

Neither of them come anywhere near Gascoigne's one against Scotland in Euro96!

Not so sure it can be compared to a hole in one...Rooney was clearly trying to score, I don't think pro golfers try for holes in one, do they?...I thought they aim for certain parts of the green normally?

It was a decent enough strike but it's not an extraordinary goal and has been done by a few already

Think his volley against Newcastle was better ( the one against City was a shiner )

All the cynics that call goals like that flukes only ever seem to spout that when its an Englishman that scores it.

I remember some brazilin toe poking a goal for barcelona against chelsea a few years ago and it was hailed as goal of the century.

If that had been rooney, beckam et al it would have been called a fluke by the usuall 'anti england' brigade!!!!!!!!!!!
