Hi folks

Just wondered if anyone who has volunteered at pro events could advise me.

I am thinking of offering my services as a volunteer later in the year. On the application form it asks whether I'd like to be a Marshal or Scorer. There isn't much more detail on it other than to say that scorer can be in a fixed score board or as a group scorer following a group around.

Ideally I'd like to follow a group as opposed to being stationed in one place all day but you can't specify that. I am leaning towards scorer as I'd be concerned about not seeing much action if I were a marshal.

Anyone who's done either/both care to share their experience?

if you are scorer then its either a fixed position or follow a group, if its a marshal you could be at a walkway:(, entrance:(, behind a tee:cool:, green:cool: or at the car park:angry::o (probably rotated as a volunteer)

In reality you will get moved around I would think and still get to see lots of action- you will also probably get 'time off' to 'do your own thing'

Have marshalled at Loch Lomond when the Scottish Open was held there. I was given a spot for 2 hours then moved so your not stuck in the same place. Time to go for lunch or walk the course was also allowed although we just hit the beer tent.

Great fun in good weather and you get a bit of crsic with the punters as long as you dont act like your on a power trip.

Go for it :-)

I marshalled at a St Andrews open and the last Carnoustie Scottish Open - was mainly in same place - crossing to tented village at 3rd/16th at the open (ball spotting on 17th on the Sunday) and fourth tee at Carnoustie. Was lucky enough to Marshall for Tiger in a practice round at Carnoustie - he was a gent back then - and got picked to walk and Marshall the media as Daly beat Rocca - a policeman and I got Rocca's wife through the mob at the 18th in regulation when he holed that shot - she kissed and hugged us both - also got asked to ball spot for Woosie after the fourth as he won the Scottish - wonderful experiences

Take it your volunteering for royal Aberdeen?

Volunteered for work at the open. Through r and a site.

My club, being a near neighbour or Wentworth always gets asked to supply volunteers for the BMW. I've not done it personally but plenty of members have. Just register your interest with the office and when Wentworth ask they give your name. Might be tempted one year

Marshalled at the Scottish open first year it was at Castle Stuart. Despite a ton of cockups by the senior marshall really enjoyed it. Got a great spot before the weather delay, between the 11th(par 3) and the beach, watching anything that was hooked bouncing among the pebbles and then marking it for the players, was a good way to interact with some of them. The free waterproof and beer money didn't hurt either
