I have a feeling this has been raised in the past. Gary (Region 3) is playing at my place on Sunday to get to know the course before we play our third round match in the National Matchplay Championships (we won our first two matches away - one on the last hole and one on the first extra hole). I have fitted Gary into our stableford qualifier and Gary would like to know if he can play it as a qualifier.

I haven't told him yet that the 8 qualifiers from 16th October, with SSS 72 have been:

CSS - 71, 72, 72, 74, 75, 75 (RO), 75 (RO), 75 (RO).

I think there are 2 questions here -
1. can he play in the club competition as an entrant and potentially winner
2. can he play as a Q entrant

my take is that the former is entirely up to the club (but for purposes of precedents etc I would be against it) and on the latter it's purely a matter of the handicap sec being happy to administer it as an open, including Gary's score in the CSS calc etc All this would have to be clarified before teeing off obviously. On this latter, I would point out that this is effectively Gary rquesting to play a supplemental at an away course (but with the rider that it would include a CSS). As such I can see more arguments for a polite No than an easy yes (and again there are precedent issues).

I would tactfully suggest that Gary's lucky to get the slot, and should quietly enjoy that priviledge :)

I was on holiday a couple of years ago and wanted to play at Royal North Devon. The Pro told me that there was a qualifying competition on that day and no free slots when I wanted to play but I could drop in with a couple of members who were playing in the comp. I was fine with this and asked if I could play in it too, he said okay and that he would forward my card to my club.

I played in the comp and handed my card in but it never reached my club, which wasn't an issue for me as I buffered, despite thinning a brand new Pro V1 that I'd been saving for my holiday round straight into the stream that crosses the first hole quite close to the tee. :o

A visitor playing in a club qualifier is no different than one playing in a single's Open. Its up to the club and the comps committee. And there's nothing stopping Gary from reporting his score to his home club.
