Uber - the end?

As an ex private hire driver (not for uber I hasten to add) I find this ruling hilarious. THey are completely self employed, as I was, quite how a judge can rule any different is beyond me. All that wil happen is if Uber actually survive this, they will place restrictons on when drivers can work, days off etc, as an actual employer would have to. Absolutely shot themselves in the foot through greed

He is an employee in everything but name so the company avoids all the NI, pension set up, holidays, sick pay etc. This ruling is designed to stop this but I am interested to hear how @SaintHacker you think Uber is different and should not be covered by this. (I am not being sarky, I am interested to understand it better)

• Uber set the contract terms and drivers had no say in them
• Request for rides is constrained by Uber who can penalise drivers if they reject too many rides
• Uber monitors a driver's service through the star rating and has the capacity to terminate the relationship if after repeated warnings this does not improve

Sound like employees to me ...

It's going to rightly have ramifications with the gig economy...

Let's end that rubbish and get back to employing people

Also a great way of making sure tax is paid correctly

Same with everything in life

Once everything is correctly done so tax and employees are paid fairly then prices for the end user become higher

Same when they finally catch up with amazon

All taxi fares are set to certain extent, whether it set fare for an airport or by the local authority setting and sealing the meters

• Uber set the contract terms and drivers had no say in them

Nothing stopping them going elsewhere if they didn't like the terms

Well yeah, stops drivers cherry picking the best work and ensures customers requiring shorter rides don't miss out

THere is no set limit on when they work, how long they work, when they have time off etc etc. They were self employed contractors, just as I was. Why try to end the 'gig economy', for some people it actually suits believe it or not

For every 1 person it suits there are 5 it doesn't and would suit better getting proper paid contracts

So many companies use "self employed" staff to do their work. I thought the inland revenue changed the rules so that self employed couldnt just work for 1 company, but obviously you still can.
I wonder if Charlie Mullins is going to be spitting feathers now...

As soon as Uber (where I live) starts treating its drivers like the employees they are I'll start using Uber.
I've only been in an Uber once, while visiting my daughter in Denver.
She called it, I didn't.

Uber only exist because people want to pay as little as possible.
Personally I hate them and thier drivers who insist on stopping anywhere their phone says to without any consideration for the traffic behind or in front.

I think Uber is brilliant. They don't rip you off and you never have to wait more than 5 or 6 minutes for a cab. I like the emails you get afterwards showing the times, the fare and a full map of the journey they have taken (meaning they can't take you round the houses to up the fare because you've got evidence there). They've been nothing short of revolutionary. It would be a shame if they packed it in, but then, someone else with the same model would probably just take over the market. I think there's a similar one called Gett but I've not tried it.

Nothing but positive experiences of Uber drivers and ordering the Uber’s themselves.
Beats phoning multiple taxi firms up or getting overcharged.

I needed a taxi to work in Dec to bring my old car back from work. 5.30am pick up. 12miles - £35.

Completely forgot about Uber. Probably would of got it for £20 with Uber.

I've had nothing but perfect experiences with Uber in the UK and abroad.

You order, they turn up, they drop you off and it's half the price you would have paid ?‍

Think this is underated about Uber is the ease of use abroad

So helpful if you don't speak the local lingo . Use your app to order a cab .. very useful
