For the past 2 weeks, I have had some good outings. So I am (fairly) confident that I will achieve my goal of breaking 90 this season. Played at Pine Ridge this weekend. I like the course. It is a crown property that is set up for societies - dont lose much balls, good greens, quick round. I have had some very good outing on it. So I had a feeling that today would be day.

Way too much pressure on myself. Plus we got stuck behind a slowish 4 ball. The game just collapsed. The harder I tried, the worse it got. So gave up trying after 15 only to Par the next 3!!!

Final score 104. I havent played that bad at Pine Ridge for a very very long time. Now all my confidence has evaporated...

Quick round at Pine Ridge, such a thing doesn't exist in my experience

Know where you are coming from. Been hitting it well despite the scores not coming for weeks now. Warm up for the medal today and hitting well. Start with two pars, a double courtesy of a bad chip and another par. All good and playing well. Then went double, triple, bogey, bogey, triple to go out in 12 over. Came back in +5 and wasn't hitting it well but started scrambling from everywhere. Swing disintegrated. No idea what happened but definitely not a case of trying to hard.

Ive been banging on about how close a good score was. Today I'll hold my hands up and say I played rubbish. Strange game ain't it?

Know the feeling. I'm also trying to break 90. Been hitting it well lately and was feeling good about it today, but once again just way too many dumb mistakes (duffed chips being the main culprit these days) and came in with 93. It really is only a matter of time, but each time I just fall short it ups the pressure for next time out.

Compared to Pine Ridge everywhere is quick

We can generally get thru Pine Ridge in under 4 hrs.. but yesterday a 2 ball took us about 4.5 hrs despite a buggy. A 4 ball in front of us just would not let us thru even though they were spraying the ball and spent 5 mins each searching for their drives.

BTW, did not realise you and Homer share the same home course.. Planning to visit Royal this season, probably twilight or similar cheap deal.

Try not to shoot a certain number, for me I play well when placing a round together, and to rattle off a few cliche's, play one hole at a time and think through the more important shots. Never give yourself a target for each hole, just play a bit more cautiously on harder holes, and be more positive on easier holes.

If you have a bad hole, forget it, a few bogeys or a couple of pars will get you right back on track. I suffered with the same problem and these mental adjustments have helped me recently.

Trying to shoot a score is fatal. You have to remain patient and not force anything...that is where mistakes happen. It is the big thing I have learnt in the past 12 months and how my handicap has fallen quite considerably in that time frame

I never consciously try and compile a score - it never works for me. I have found over years of experience, if I go out with high expectations I rarely play well, regardless of how my form is. I concentrate now on trying to enjoy my golf, and invariably play far better in competitions if I'm relaxed and in good company.

I've had eighteen months of hitting the ball like a dog, and through trying too hard I went up in every competition bar one in that time, from a steady single figure golfer playing off 9, to a handicap of 11 I could not play to.

I made a very real decision this year to just enjoy it, not even look at my card until I walked off 18, and am reaping the rewards. Six qualifiers in and I went up 0.1 in one, buffered in two, and have come down in three. The only danger now is I'm going to start expecting great things again, but I'm fighting the urge!!

Sounds great!! you had some slow rounds there I take it

Not been there for a few years because I got fed up with the delays. There was always at least a 3 group wait on the 2nd tee (yes 2nd) and last time I was there we were 35 minutes late teeing off. It's a decent enough course but not good enough to wait for.

Is the first hole a par 3 then to have that sort of build up early on is crazy. Played on a course where the 2nd hole was a par 3 and the build up on the 3rd tee was similar to what your mention. The 1st hole was an easy short par 4 so nobody ever got held up on there. Dont take long for congestion to build up
