I discovered my arm (left) was coming away from my chest rather dramatically today. Went to the range with a towel, put it between my left arm and chest and worked on my backswing. Did quite a bit of this today....anyone know any cause or impediment to not do it lots?

That's a tried and tested drill.
I'm sure there's a drill in the instruction section of this site which has Padraig doing the same but using a glove instead of a towel.

A good drill for wedge work is to use a towel long enough to be held across the chest under both armpits, keep it there whilst pitching. The purpose is to aid consistency (and speaking from my own experience helps cure the J Arthurs!)

I love the whole towel drill for pitching.

One Eldrick Tiger Woods (who he?) agrees that you have to include your body on pitching. "I never try to swing through the ball with my hands and arms alone, because it's too difficult to control the loft of the clubface and regulate clubhead speed"

He doesn't mention towels, but I think we get the gist!

This drill for pitching has saved my 30-70 yd short game on more than one occasion.

Yes, I agree, good old Tiger!! I've been using my body during pitching recently and have noticed an improvement in control.

Just for info, my 300 reps (100 balls) with the towel produced some solid hitting today.
Managed to bag 3 260-275 yarders (with 88-90 mph!! :) ) and shot a nice 39 (9 holes) (bang on).
Only slight downside was over pitching a few times thinking about what I wrote about including the body!!
FT-3, sounds awful, goes well though...only 1 missed fairway.
