I have noticed some players hover their driver above the ground before striking the ball, does this improve the chances of you making a better shot?and should this be applied to the irons and the putter, bearing in mind when you ground the putter you have addressed the ball, any guidence please...

What ever feels comfortable really. I dont hover any club and if the club gets hindered when taking the club back i stop and think about what i can do then hit it. Ive tried hovering but only lasted 2 holes as feels like im going to top the ball or catch it heavy.

I've tried this and it just feels so alien. Just doesn't feel right. If I stuck to it it may become easier. Isn't it supposed to reduce tension or something?

I was told that 80% of Pros hover but only 10% of amateurs do it .... if its good enough for them its good enough for me.
How do they do that? Is it just those skinny light weight ones who can hover or can anyone do it?

It happened to be in te latest edition of golf digest...
it says it just helps release tension, just like the way to waggle the club. I dont do it and i dont like doing it but i recommend you try it as you might like it

Not for me. Eliminates tension my ****.

Hovering anything still takes quite a lot of muscle control = tension.
I should know ( :D)

Not that I'd say not to do it if it works. Each to their own.

This made me laugh, reminded me of something the wifes best friend told her.

When her Son was of an age where she took him in to the ladies, he'd obviously overheard his mum talking to his big Sister, and said to his mum, "Mummy, are you hovering, I'm hovering". :)

Well I thought it was funny. :D

Golfmmad.

I always have. I think I picked it up at an early age from watching one of my pals who played off about 6 when he was 13 and I've never managed to break the habit. I even did it with my putts until last year when I realised the wind kept blowing the putter head around too much at address. I then got a couple of penalty shots when the wind blew my ball after addressing it. You canny win.

I only hover with my driver, have done since I started to play 6 years ago, not sure why I started, happens automatically now, I dont even realise I am doing it.

I hover and was told it helps add distance to a drive, myth or fact, who knows :D

Don't do it myself but I think it's to help promote a smooth take away.

I understand the theory behind it but when I've tried to do it I found that it encourages me to "snatch" the club back on the takeaway

I thought it was more to do with the one piece takeaway rather than relieving tension. Never done it so imagine it'll feel alien if I did. Might be worth mucking about with it at the range and seeing though. Don't believe for a minute though that it will add more distance
