As some of you may know now, I am relatively new to golf and been playing for around 6 months.

When I go to the range, my first 10-15 balls are like I have never hit a ball before, and then I start getting into the swing of things (excuse the pun).

Are there any tips for warming up correctly? Or how to start hitting like you know how to straight away? Or, is this just a come with time / practice type thing I need to get over.

At the moment, I feel I absolutely need to go to the range before a round to get these out of my system, but if I am practicing at the range, it sets things off on the wrong tone.

Any advice / excercises / tips would be greatly appreciated!

What is your current warm up?

I personally spend 30 seconds swinging the club slowly just to get loose, I then work through a few dynamic stretches....ie movements related to golf to get my wrists moving freely, the shoulders turning, the hips moving etc. Then a couple of static stretches (back, hamstings, shoulders) then a couple more swings of the club and then off I go.

I normally tee off very early morning so don't have time to hit the range before so rely on the above to get me going. I guess part of your issue is that as a relative noob the golf swing isn't ingrained into your body. Once you've been playing a little while I'd suggest you'll find it easier to get your round going.

usually hit half wedges for the first 10 balls or so. it helps me find my rhythm

I've found that my best rounds have often come when i hit balls into a net rather than on the driving range before i play. reasons being -

I am focused purely on my strike and warming up and i not the outcome. This means that when i get on the 1st tee my head is clear and is confident i am striking the ball well (despite the fact the shots in the net might have been going 80yds left/right)

I find that when i warm up on the range i often end up trying to change things to accomodate for the bad shots i am hitting that day.

start slowly and small stretches- then small wedge chips leading to 3/4 wedges- keep rhythm and dont belt or hurry. You'll see a difference.

Everyone is different- I start with a 3 iron smooth swing and work my way down. A mate starts with driver and no warm up, he usually hits a top, duff, screamer, duff, top, screamer. Each to their own

A few easy swings and stretches then hitting some short chip and pitch shots.

If I'm playing a comp, or anything that matters, I always make the time to hit a few shots at the range or into nets. Working up through the bag..... Just to loosen off and find the swing. If I just jump out the car onto the tee, anything can happen!

On the range, a few 7 irons focussing on hitting with the club face and not the hosel :o

Before a comp, I'd like to allow plenty of time but rarely do. It tends to be a 10 min chat in the pro shop, 5 balls in the net, 5 putts and off :D

In my opinion the only way to fix this is to play more regularly. Nowadays i walk onto the first tee without having hit or putt a ball. Thats my routine and i am playing better than ever. Playing almost every summer evening this year has seriously helped me with consistency. Before that i had to make sure i had warmed up properly and was dreading the first tee.

I will probably hit between 8-15 balls in the nets. Usually a short iron, 8-PW. I'll then go out onto the putting green for 10-15 mins. I might do a little bit of chipping (if time allows, and if the pro isn't watching, as we aren't supposed to chip around the green).

By this time its usually five minutes before tee off, so I will go down to the first and have a good few practice swings (following through and back) and then i'll make a few proper swings, and then tee off. (where the ball ends is another story......)

I tend to do some stretching and swing two clubs together slowly to start getting the muscles use to the golf swing. Usually hit some 50 yard pitches and then through the short irons as I warm up. Only in comp rounds these days. In the Saturday roll up these days I'll give it a couple of knocks in the net and get on with it

Bought a foam roller with spikey bits as I suffer with tight calves! Roll the legs before I leave gets them loose. First at the course do some chipping to get the arms going etc and a feel. Then some 7irons in the net. A few putts and off we go. Working so far!

A very LARGE coffee when rushed (or CBA).

Twisting and stretching for a minute first, then a few irons in the net followed by 5 mins putting and chipping.
