I was reading something on line (based in america) about tiger and what he could do to repair his reputation.

This guy believed that Tiger should get to 18 Majors and then retire. This way he would acknowledge that Jack was the greatest and he was not good enough to beat him.

My view is that this would damage his reputation further as I would feel it would be disrespectful to not try and beat the record. It would almost say, I know I am better than you, but I would like some more advertising!

Am I wrong or was this guy an bit wrong?
 
Only Tiger knows what his body can do now and how much more his knee can take.

I'm still of the opinion golf needs Tiger. Hope to see him at The Open. Speedy recovery Mr Woods.
 
Not sure his body or his game will get him to Jacks record now anyway. I think there is potentially another major in him but that is about all. I still think he'll be competitive until he decides to call it quits but don't think he's going to get back to the pinnacle again including world number 1
 
Whether he can physically do it or not the fact is that it was always Tiger's ultimate goal to beat Jack's major record so if he should get to 18 I can't see him stopping at that point. I also agree with thecraw that golf still needs Tiger, mainly because we had over a decade of watching his brilliance, and despite the fact there are a lot of great players coming through, no one single player seems to be in a position to make the game as watchable as Tiger did, and there are plenty of golf viewing figures to back this up.
 
Tiger won't retire if he reaches 18 majors and neither should he. If he is able to get to 18 majors is another question completely.

To win again consistently he needs to regain his confidence with the putter, he used to be able to hole the key putts like nobody else, but not any more.
 
Supposing he can get to 18 which is unlikely now, why should he stop without even trying to beat him? That's a ridiculous suggestion. Jack wouldn't want it and Tiger wouldn't want it. The only way Tiger shows if he is or isn't good enough to beat Jack is to keep playing until he no longer has the game to beat him. That's the only way.

As was said above, greatness is more than winning majors, Tiger is clearly a great golfer whether he beats Jack or not, but that doesn't make him a great man.

Comparing the two is pointless anyway, they are both greats of the golfing world but played in different eras with different equipment and different competition. The only thing you can say for sure is that they were both the best of their generation.

I'm not so sure.

He last won a major in 2008. That's not long ago in golfing terms.

Jack went a few years between victories on more than one occasion, including a 6 year gap in the early 80s.

Tiger has had a nightmare time over the last two years away from golf, but he has still managed half a dozen top 10 finishes in the majors alone.

Don't write him off yet.

I'm not the greatest Woods fan, but I keep on living in hope that one day he will wake up and realise what a great game golf is, and learn to enjoy the game again, like he did when his dad was alive.

Then he might well find those extra few titles within himself.
 
If I was Tiger I wouldn't care about my reputation all I would care about is winning 5 more majors and I think he will win more, if he wins one he will be a confident Tiger again and it will be a case of watchout
 
In his prime, he was winning without hardly trying and the field were content with playing for 2nd place.
If he was playing just ok, he would win but with a small margin. If he was playing his best, no-one would get near him.
Now, his game isn't what it was and the field know that.
He's lost that aura he once had.
As he gets older, he will find it harder and harder to get it back both physically and mentally.
He has to work harder than ever these days, what with the rebuild to his game and I wonder if his body and mind will be able to cope.

I think the game of golf needs Tiger playing every week,Im not his biggest fan but theres no doubt he was the best in
the world by a long way,I really cant see anyone else
dominating the game like he did,and to me,thats a good thing
the likes of Westwood,Donald,kaymer, dont seem that bothered
who's number 1,they just play their game week in week out.Ithink the americans think golf is "their" game,and they
dont see anybody taking woods place
 
Tiger would do more to improve his reputation by improving his interview technique than anything he does on the course, he is just so unpleasant its painful to watch.
 
Becoming a 'Golfing Great' isnt just about how many titles you win, or how much money, its about how you respect the game of Golf, its traditions, its values, and in turn, how much you are adored by the worlds fans universally.
For me....
Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, Ballasteros, and especially Watson, all are God's in Golfing Great terms.
Not far behind are the likes of Norman, Crenshaw, Stewart, even Faldo.

Wood's golf may have been some of the best ever witnessed, but it doesnt matter how long he continues to play/win/make billions, I dont think he'll ever be thought of with the same affection as those above, ......ever,......period.

Me .........I couldnt care less whether he ever picks up a club again, I think he's an arrogant SOB.
 
I'm one of the few the believes Tiger can still be recorded as the greatest player of all time. Granted his attitude could do with some work but someone will pull him in line. Remember, he only does stupid things when playing badly.

His game is somewhere inside him and sooner or later it will burst out and everyone will eat their words. The guy is a fitness freak and is said to be the most commited player on tour to training.

As for giving up, even if I'm talking garbage and he never makes it back to his best then why should he give up? the guy still gets appearance fees because people want to see him. Nowadays he is classed as a good golfer so lets not forget he also is still getting decent results and earning money from comps and sponsors.

If I were Tiger, i would quite happily keep going.
 
Is everyone mad? we are talking about Tiger Woods here not some journeyman pro from Hicksville who has won a couple of events. Tiger has played in arguably the most intense competition of all time. Are we all forgetting his golfing achievements?

I've probably missed a load out as well, we jump up and down when we win a medal.
Tiger may have his demons and it is entirely his fault but lets not have any silly calls for retirement there are wins still in this guy and I believe he will win again, he is a born winner.

I don't think he does give a toss about his reputation, but I think that he's going to find it hard to win one again all the time he beats himself up everytime he hits a bad shot.

In the old days, he'd accept any position he found himself, then either get out of it with a great recovery, or, if he did drop a shot, then he'd fire in a couple of birdies to make up for it.

Like Bob said, it gets mentally tougher as you get older.

I've said before I think golf is about making the most of imperfection, and I think maybe Tiger just needs to remember that.

I think thats normal when you play well you have the shots at hand to get out of anything when you are not you bemoan your luck
