I was speaking to a friend on Saturday about "Royal" golf clubs, and he said to me that if you were a member of one you could play at another "Royal" course for free…??

Surely this is complete rubbish…

Saying that though I am sure I heard it somewhere before, or is it just wishful thinking??

I don't think it's true that you can play at all Royal clubs, however I do know that some top venues have recipricol arrangements with other courses in their area that allows free or discounted play at one course for members of another.

Some Royal (and other 'top' clubs) have reciprocal rights, but I don't think there is a general Royal policy. If there was, that would mean that Homer could pitch up at Royal St Georges and demand a freebie.

dont think your far off with this answer

we have that up here with the reciprocal rights or whatever it's called.

i can play about a dozen courses at half price because of this so it's very good.

and half price round here means most green fee's would be about £10 so you can't go wrong at that.

There are a lot of reciprocal agreements (one example is our place and Castlerock, agree low rates to eachothers members) as well as associations, the James Braid association for example, any course that was designed, amended or rebunkered by him and have signed up give 'playing with a member' rates.

I and the members of my club have no idea this was available to us.Would be nice if the club took time to inform us of this fact.Blairgowrie at £50 a day will be used I feel as may a few others.

There you go, you know now :) it has been on our club website for a year or more now and the list gets added to monthly. If there are any meets in the future, Ill be using it to see if there are any local courses and make a trip out of it. Cheap golf for the win!

Yeah we have reciprocal rates with about for clubs, used to be free but now pay £5. Think we have ours, scraptoft, Cosby, Kettering and now from next week stoke rochford. Take note gb72!

We have reciprocal arrangements with 7 other clubs. We can go and play them at no charge, just require a letter of introduction and a pre-arranged booking.

Why would clubs agree free golf? You don't get free golf as a member so why give it to members of other clubs??

Reciprocal is fair enough but not free....makes no business sense at all.

It's a very nice membership incentive. Knowing that you can go away and at a number of other clubs included as part of yor memberships. I don't think everyone uses it ( only used it twice myself in 2 years - although plan to make more use next year), I don't know how many visitors we've had from the other clubs over the last year but it's fair to say we've not been swamped. Personally I'm all for it- the clubs concerned have agreed to swallow the green fees on reciprocal introductions.

bit awkward if they don't… :o

plus having rung royal st george's before, and made a fool of myself, not again…!

Your mate might be thinking of the Crown courses not the royal. If you're a member at a crown course then you can play any other for free. But I think it's limited to something like 6 a year.

Our very own HTL did mention something like this to me when we met at The London Club in 2009. He was a member at Royal Ascot at the time.

Homer/HawkeyeMS may be able to confirm.

We get free golf at Stoneham, Ferndown and Brokenhurst. Their members get the same at our place. We also get cheap golf at some other clubs including Hayling Island. Think it was started so that if your course was closed for a competition, you had somewhere to play. Not going to complain as free golf, especially at Ferndown is a very nice perk of membership.

According to the website at RA

The Directors are pleased to announce that we have now successfully concluded arrangements which will allow RAGC members to play at seven Golf Courses within the UK at no charge. These Clubs operate to similar standards as RAGC and all have high quality golf courses which we are confident you will enjoy playing.
The Seven Clubs with which we have now finalised Reciprocal Arrangements are:

I was under the impression we had a reciprical with Royal Melbourne and Royal Calcutta going back to when we were based at the racecourse and wonder if these have gone now we've moved. We don't (as far as I'm aware) automatically have a deal with any other royal club based on the Royal patronage alone

Reciprocal arrangements are great value if your club has one, also check if you can get a 'County Card' about £20 but give some fantastic deals all over the country.
