Just watched the BBC Documentary about the 1967 Celtic European Cup winning team.

Great programme and well worth a watch for any true football fan.

An achievement that will never be matched on these shores ever

Not sure if you mean that it was all local lads that won for Celtic that cant be matched but think Forest's double win under Clough was pretty special to be fair.

I would guess the local aspect.

Other teams can have claims for greater wins, Forest being the obvious, but the stat about where the players were from was very special.

Should have won it in 1970 as well, but took Feyenoord too lightly after beating Leeds home and away in the semi.

Got to the semis in 72 and 74 as well, losing the first one on penalties to Inter Milan, then being kicked off the park by Athletico Madrid, some record for a Scottish club.

They were very special - and I'm not sure that we quite knew how special they were. Mind you I was only a wee lad at the time - remembering the Feyenoord game better (was gutted that they lost). I was a goalie at primary school (all 4'10" of me) and Ronnie Simpson was my hero :)

When you watch clips of Jimmy Johnstone dribbling - utterly mesmerising and you see why his nickname was Jinky :)

The early 70's get a bit forgotten in history. Derby and Leeds both came close in that time but it barely gets a mention. I didn't know about Celtic getting to the semi's twice during that time either, thanks for educating me .

I believe there was some extremely dubious refereeing and money changing hands between officials and certain European clubs during that time. I think it is Brian Glanville, reporter, who has written extensively on this front. I heard him on the radio once talking about Derby being cheated out of Europe. We may have been celebrating even more English and Scottish victories had this not been the case.

It wasn't just the 70s - Dundee United were cheated out of a place in the 1984 EC Final after Roma gave the referee a 50k bribe.

This was actually confirmed by one of the Roma directors years later.

Same thing happened to Forest in the UEFA Cup semi final the same year.

I think it was an Italian thing in particular as I remember Glanville talking about bribes that he confirmed Inter gave to officials. As bad as drug cheats, it robs other players of legendary status at those clubs.

Inter Milan vs Liverpool in 1965 being one of the most infamous in the semis.

They scored direct from an indirect free kick, booted the ball out of our keepers hands in the 2nd leg etc.

We'd have been the first British team to win it after knocking Celtic out in the QF's as well if it wasn't for that dodgy ref in the San Siro, after us being 3-1 up from the 1st leg.

Fantastic (and pretty unique) achievement by Celtic calling on their squad from all local lads, as well. I knew this previously, but I've sky+ed the documentary so will have to watch it this week.

Wow, I never knew it came out that Dundee were also cheated out of becoming runners up to Liverpool in 1984.

Shameful, and yet again UEFA did nothing about it.

I also didn't know about Di Bartolomei committing suicide 10 years later.

Notice you don't mention the dodgy decision to disallow Bobby Lennox's last minute goal in the 2nd leg at Anfield which would have seen Celtic go through :-)

Team picture in The Times today accompanying an excellent piece by Matthew Syed on the Lisbon Lions - focusing on Stevie Chalmers. When I looked at the picture I felt I knew every one of these lads personally - even although I have never met any of them. I was never a Celtic supporter but I was a huge fan of that team and so proud that they were Scottish - and I am still very proud of them and their manager - Jock Stein and the Lisbon Lions.

Stein, Busby and Shankly were all fantastic managers and all legends at their respective clubs, all managing sides in the same era and all born within 30 miles of each other. You would never see that now.

Looks like it's been a great night at the Arena in Glasgow. Saw some it on twitter, also saw the pictures of a few thousand Celtic fans who have returned to the stadium in Lisbon to celebrate the anniversary, nutters :)

No small number of us, who were at a semi final in 2009, are convinced it still goes on.
