NFL 2024

From what I saw the officials were attempting to let the Chiefs win. Shocking calls early on. Blimey even I'm starting to understand. Glad the others overcame the bias. Not sure how Mahomes was soooo bad. And not bothering to throw to Kelsey or whatever his name is. Very odd. Oh well. Glad I didn't bother to stay up. Too tired after Saturdays gig.

Pre-game, I had a friendly "bet" with my son that the Eagles would win by a min of 20 points. If it wasn't for the Eagles sticking on their 3rd string in the fourth, that would have come right in, and would have wiped the smirk clean off his sweaty teenage brow.

I was at the Channel 4 Super Bowl XX party at the Video Cafe. There was free Budweiser all night and I was hammered by the end but did make a couple of bets that the Bears would win by 20+. The Pats scored an early fieldgoal after a Chicago fumble and I took some stick. Then Tony Eason pooped his pants, the 46 defense went into berserker mode and I won every bet with ease.

Sorry but that is the kind of ridiculous take that belongs on the footie thread. Just because a first-year color commentator said he didn't like the call does not make it incorrect. What the official saw was the receiver push off the defender's face and hence threw the flag. The official further up the field could over-rule it from his angle but he did not. Those kinds of takes belong in the teenage social media meme category.

What's the feeling about how bad Mahomes was and was it just down to the pressure from the Eagles? He just didn't look right. Game too far? Overwhelmed by the thought of 3 years on the trot?

The Eagles defense was fantastic. Mahomes had nowhere to go downfield. The line got the glory for the sacks but the coverage was amazing. When the Bucs beat KC four years ago, it was because the Chiefs were down to the 4th and 5th string starting tackles and our edge rushers were in the backfield before Taylor Swift could do her eyelashes. Mahomes did amazingly to even get three fieldgoals for the offense that day. This time round, he did miss some passes but it looked like he was forcing it because of the Fangio defense that won the game for Philly.

One more great Super Bowl story. All of the NFL teams send a couple of their PR team along to each one to help out. They are all designated a particular player who they escort round to interviews and events before and after. One of my friends was doing a Super Bowl some years ago and ran on the field at the end to try and find her player. They had all put champions T-shirts over their jerseys, taken their helmets off, 100s of people everywhere and confetti raining down. And all she and about 30 other PR people cared about were finding their players in the melee.

Simple explanation is that the Eagles got consistent pressure with just sending 4 and dropping 7 into coverage. They didn't send a single blitz yet Mahomes was pressured on nearly half his dropbacks. No QB in the NFL can win under those circumstances.

Fangio's defenses have always been like that. He doesn't like to blitz and if the front 4 get consistent pressure then you are in for a long day as his coverage schemes on the back can be really confusing for a QB. The Eagles also have a lot of talent in the secondary and their two rookies have been outstanding. He wasn't as successful in Miami last year (but did a good job with what he had) as the front 4 couldn't get consistent pressure, there were games were they lived in the backfield and others were they couldn't touch the QB and by the end of the season all the pass rushers were injured. Even in the games we couldn't get pressure he wouldn't blitz and the zones got shredded and he refused to change up coverages so we ended up with stupid situations like Jalen Ramsey covering WR3 while Kadar Kohou was getting roasted by WR1. Was pretty frustrating to watch at times.

Would usually agree with you re the officials comment, particularly when it comes to Mahomes but not so much on Sunday. There was one iffy OPI call early against AJ Brown (although he did shove his hands into the DB's face mask) but it was soon evened up by an even more iffy PF call on the KC linebacker (might have been Bolton) on Barkley. Other than that, KC didn't really get any calls (even including a what could have been called hands to the face on Mahomes after the strip fumble).
Not saying that the officials were good. However, they were better than the HT show (although that might be my age)

Similar to the previous SB that KC lost to Shark's Bucs, the Oline couldn't hold up against the pass rush (& very similar to Brady's two loses to the Giants) and he started getting happy feet. Also, Reid called a bad offensive game plan, as he went down 10-0 early and completely abandoned the running game.
Loved it - neither Kelce or Mahomes could look as smug on the sideline and we hardly saw Swifty either. Win win

Not your age! Poorest half-time show ever. Most of the crowd were totally subdued. Completely boring and created
no atmosphere or buzz. Cameos from Samuel L. and Serena Williams do not a half time show make.

Would have been better pulling Macca out of the crowd for an impromptu 20 minute rendition of Hey Jude!!

Not sure about that, I thought it was excellent. Think I saw today it it's the most watched half time ever.

Random question

How much does the combine affect someone’s potential draft position or prospects
For the vast majority not that much but you always get a few that are massively over drafted after the "Underwear Olympics".

I remember Miami moving up in the draft in 2013 and I thought for sure they were going to draft Lane Johnson (who has a good shot at the Hall Of Fame) but instead they chose a workout warrior in Dion Jordan who ended up being complete garbage. He performed amazing in his underwear though.

Shemar Stewart won the underwear olympics this year, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up getting drafted in the top 10 which is mental for a defensive lineman that has had only 4.5 sacks in the last 3 years.
