For me the SPOTY lost its appeal when it went PC. Why do we now have to have a panel to choose who we vote for. The clue of the show is in the title of SPOTY. Personality. Not necessarily achievement over the year. But I would sooner vote for someone who has over achieved. Someone who has flogged there guts out to achieve. Someone who has inspired others. Not some entitled knob with the personality of a sprout.
In this day and age, all voting can be done online the BBC site has countless posts where you can pick from dozens of players for teams of the week, so why it then has a voting process of 6 people to vote from is beyond me.

Not sure why some still get fixated by the word “Personality”

It was called that purely because someone else had the title Sportsman etc of the year

And before they created the panel in 2012 it was done by a panel of 30 journalists who submitted their nominees and then the public voted

There has always been some sort of panel to help bring the nominees down to decent number and it’s always been about the best achievements as can been seen by 99.999% of the winners

I think this year was the first time there was a charge to phone in and vote? Not sure how that usually happens but I assume the network providers all get on board to offer the calls for free? In which case another nail in the coffin for the show. I voted on the BBC website which is still free.

Anyone who listens to The Rest Is Entertainment podcast will be familiar with the following stat. Of the 16-34 age group, only 14% watch old school tv, BBC, ITV etc. 14%. That is why this show and many others are dying a slow death, maybe not so slow for many. Lots of tv shows are looked at through rose tinted glasses but those times are gone and the new generations simply don't care about them. There is no point in trying to jazz the programme up, they would only alienate the declining number who still watch.
If it wasn't for Phil making this thread every year, I would have no idea when Sports Personality was even on.
