I still dont understand why we are still messing around with lines.

Multiple cameras around the ground should generate enough images to render an accurate rotational 3D model so you can be shown a view directly in line across the pitch in line with the action. They manage to do it in European matches but somehow we cant manage it reliably here....even when we do get a 3D computer generated image - it is only ever rotated so we get shown a view from around 30 degrees to the relevant action....never directly in line.
Imagine going back to who we were 20/30 years ago, and someone gave us this sentence as a way we could determine whether a player was offside or not. Not sure if we'd be amazed with where technology is taking us, or horrified at the complexity of it.

Life was so much simpler just having a man and a flag, warts and all

Even a grainy-ish still from the moment the ball leaves the foot - if it looks offside - give it, if it doesn't, stick.

Didn’t see the Spurs Forest game yesterday but a mate told me he saw Tudor walk straight down the tunnel as soon as whistle blown and have seen nothing on this. Those who saw the game, did this happen. I have seen games before where the managers shooknhands before the final whistle, so this could have happened. If it didn’t to me that’s poor form.

Apparently he had to rush off because of his father who passed away

I know the VAR debate has been done to death. And I know if it was scrapped, we'd all experience heart ache, anger and frustration as soon as an appauling decision goes against us.

But, Premier League referees earn an average salary of £180,000 a year, with top officials getting around £250,000. Assistant referees get around £110,000 a year. They are pretty well paid, and I think for that money the onfield officials should be the ones to take 100% responsibility for all the decisions that are made. We can see them, they are not hiding away in a booth hundreds of miles away. They can look at players and managers in the eye, and explain why they have or haven't made a decision. And, most importantly, the officials know they MUST make a decision one way or another. They can't ever be accused of not being decisive on a subjective decision, and leaving the big call to VAR if applicable.

I'd even be happy to use all the money that goes into VAR, or a lot of it, to boost the salaries of onfield officials. Make it an even more desireable job despite the public scrutiny, and hopefully more cream will rise to the top.

Until the refs have to face media and manager questioning and explain their decisions, there are no consequences. The don’t get fined (as far as I am aware). On a few occasions they have been stood down for a week. On a couple of occasions they have been relegated. To me their only consequence is not getting the cup final.

Pointless, they cannot undo what they have done, it's just an excuse for more people to line up and bitch and whine at them while not asnwering why their striker cannot score for 4 yards and falls over whining like a shot dog every 5 minutes.

Does anyone really think having referrees trying to justify their mistakes by answering the scummy press and tv presenters is ever going to work, really...

They get double what the PM gets just for refereeing football?!? More financial madness in football

All it would do is get fans more uptight and whining even more on socials like here. Clubs would look to bring action against them and nobody wins.

It may not. I have nothing invested in the top flight of football. I might see a little highlights if I can be bothered. I hear and read and I hear a lot of complaints quite regularly. Yes a lot of it will be from fans with vested interests. So if you think it’s pointless I will bow to your expertise and why change it. I am happy to watch league 1,2 and non league. It’s often said you get what you pay for. But is the premier league getting £180k of professional refereeing standards

I wasn’t comparing anything 🤷‍♂️

Those were just two posts that highlighted the 5cm tolerance was used this weekend again
One is the official picture released by the Officials to prove why it was a goal, the other one is some bloke drawing lines saying it was incorrect decision, do you not see the confusion posting them together can cause?

The refs are miked up, allow us to hear it. They've released the odd clip before, do it for the full match or on key incidents. If we could hear the thought process it would be much better. We might not agree with the end result but at least we would hear why they came to a particular conclusion.

Let's not just say, 'too much swearing, they couldn't do it's. That's a cop out.

I know this goes against the majority, but yes, we actually do get value for money, there is no way any Official purposely makes a bad decision.

Yes they will make mistakes, but virtually every single decision is scrutinised to the Nth degree.

I know of no other sport were Officials get every decision correct or are put under the microscope to the level Football Officials are.

The money they are paid is a pittance in comparison to the 22 players on the pitch and the profits the PL make.

As others have said, if we put this much time and effort in to scrutinising the players and their mistakes we’d probably still be discussing games from last season.

Again, I’ve got ask why? What other sport do we hear full match commentary from Officials?

If an Umpire gives an LBW do we not just accept it? Why do we think us supporters know better than the man in the middle? They get 1 look and possibly fractions of a second to make a decision, VAR now helps, but we never see them getting any praise when they are correct, that is dismissed as “that’s their job”

The decision making for any “review” is broadcast ad they are going through it in cricket

In rugby you can hear the referee throughout the whole match and any video decision is talked through and the whole conversation is heard

There can’t be any reason why we can’t hear the refs when they are talking through any var decision to help people the reasons why , what harm can it do

Just saying “what harm can it do” for who? Those at home or those in the Stadium, you’ve got no chance everyone in the stadium will hear it.

The 4th Official explains it to the Managers and they won’t accept it, so what’s the point? Why not just trust the Officials?

They can hear in the rugby stadium 🤷‍♂️

Is it going to cause any issues, if anything it might help if people can hear their understanding of the incident

The Diaz offside against Spurs communication was very enlightening

Why? Because of the Tribalism and self entitled attitude of fans when a decision doesn’t go their way! They’d be open to abuse and many fans would claim they should be as they earn so much etc.

In truth there is no need for and fans are just trying to get it to apportion even more blame and deride people that already get to much abuse for doing a job in a goldfish bowl.
