Jeff Stelling, like many in media, continuing to reveal how much a fool he is. Just wanting to be as sensationalist as possible

He blamed the non flag of offside for Villa goal on the fact linesmen are told not to flag immediately, as VAR sorts it out for them

What he had conveniently ignored is that the linesmen ALWAYS flag if they think it is offside when VAR is in use, they simply are asked to delay the flag if they think it is close. Therefore VAR is nothing to do with this particular incident. The simple reason is the linesman missed the offside.

And although it was a bad miss, I've seen worse pre VAR, and during VAR we wouldnt be talking about it as it would have ruled goal out and we forget about it. The handball non penalty was a worse one, given they correctly gave handball bit somehow were a long way out from where it actually happened

Laughable that the referee put the foam down, to show where the kick needed to be taken from, less than 2ft from where Trippier attempted to cross from.

Well I reckon we could all have predicted this...

For the conspiracy theorists amongst us, I’m one for this, they were so bad you’d almost think there was something dodgy about how bad they were. Equally, maybe they just had a bad day at the office.

you just have to wonder how much better things would be if they'd spent the money that's been spent on VAR on training to improve the referees.

they're simply not good enough for the speed of the game now, and VAR gives them a safety net which is ruining the game as a spectator sport.

Watching the games at the weekend, yes there were some awful errors. but my god they were better experiences as a viewer.

If we beat City we will no doubt get Arsenal or Liverpool in the QF's (possibly made to play both of them at the same time)...then we will get the 1978 Argentina team in the Semi's and face the 1970 Brazil team in the final....refereed by Chris Kavanagh.

Missing one round of games only to be selected again next week isn’t really goin to achieve anything though, is it.

They’ll just be terrible again next time they officiate.
So what should happen, sacked?

As far as I'm aware, the referee and linesman in question have refereed for a long time. I don't think they are high on people's radar a the "worst" referees, in that they seem to get less stick than the likes of Taylor and Tierney. Therefore, they must have generally done a pretty good job in their careers.

It is likely a loss that they won't referee next week, because it isn't like there are better officials waiting in the background. I'd imagine the best referees get picked to ref at the highest level.

They are ultimately paying a price for making big errors, as I believe referees are paid a big part of their wage on the games they do? But come the following week, they will still be better picks than another referee considered a lesser level.

Kavanagh is on UEFAs Elite list of referees...was promoted last December.
