Was the comment not that VAR was used, the ref watched the screen, and then came to the right conclusion? Surely that is "first class" as opposed to second of third class? He got it right.

Nobody said that his instinctive on field decision was "first class". Just that the use of VAR, and the onfield ref coming to the correct decision was "first class"

That was exactly my point.

4 was the sweeper when I played
Sweeper . Very progressive .

A sweeper lasted about 3 years in this country before we packed 5 in midfield. I remember watching the likes of Germany and The Netherlands having a sweeper, the odd team finally tried it over here and then everything changed and no one used a sweeper. One for the history books now.

@Lucifer MorningStar That's just rogue 😵‍💫. 5 as an attacking midfielder, you've lost it there :ROFLMAO:.

Saying this, it's all over the shop now, meaningless. Very sad. I could name classic Everton teams from the past, 1-11. Now it is pointless as the numbers are a nonsense.

I guess I never saw many teams playing with a sweeper, but it sounds silly to me - like one guy playing deeper than the rest of the defence - doesn't he just play everyone onside??

I played for a vets team for a little while.
The shirts were numbered according to sizes, the lower the number the smaller the shirt.
So if you had a big right back he might be wearing number 10.
And before anyone pipes up I wasn’t number 99 (probably should have been). 😂

Mainly a 70's thing. Beckanbauer was the greatest exponent. Different game back then. Much slower pace, the sweeper tidied things up, a spare defender who stepped up into midfield with the ball when their team had it. They tended to be elegant ball players who read the game well.

Glenn Hoddle did something similar when he got to the twilight of his career very successfully.

He certainly did. I think Gullit might have done the same at Chelsea for a spell, would not guarantee it though. Both wonderful passers and wonderful readers of the game.
Yeah it’s a role for players with both a good football brain and a good range of passing.
Interesting that both took that role at the end of their careers though rather than at the heights of their ability

I'm guessing it was partly because their legs had gone. That role gave them a little more time and space to play.

It definitely did but I wonder how could they have been there when they still could get round the pitch.
Neither would you say were could defenders or even hard tackling midfielders both were ball players.
Interesting I don’t think any good/hard defensive midfield players ever ended up playing as a sweeper

From memory, happy to accept it's murky now 🤭, they probably did more intercepting than actual tackling. Did Hoddle ever make a tackle in his career? They saw what was developing and stepped in to intercept balls. They had big ugly centre halves to do the tackling bit.

I remember Hoddle and Gullit making long range passes from the back, spraying it around at will. Usually a skill beyond your standard defensive midfielder, default being a 10yd pass at most. It may be that the slowness of play back then, different tactics as well, allowed this to happen a little more easily. It was certainly a pleasure to watch players like that glide around, casually knock a 30-40yd ball to someone.

Sorry I disagree .
A first class ref would not make a simple error like that imo.
Good from VAR yes .

Got no blinkers on as I have clearly said “ it wasn’t handball” and not a penalty.

It was a very quick incident and at first it looked like it hit the arm that was outstretched as well - that’s was the UEFA ref equivalent of PGMOL highlighted

It was only when it was slowed down to everyone see that it was the hand close to him

Everything about that whole process was spot on - we moan like mad about refs and var when it’s a mess but we alsl need to highlight when it’s correct

Indeed Gullit did. Slowly dropped back from forward to midfield to sweeper. Was very effective.

I remember Newcastle struggling against Reading in a Pre Season friendly in 98 or 99. Gullit (who was actually the manager!!) came on, played sweeper and dictated the game....was obviously a class above everyone on the pitch even at 36/37.

Spot on about Hoddle and Gullit both on their later stages floated back to be a sweeper in front of the back four - Hoddle at Monaco was excellent when he went there and then continued at Swindon and Chelsea

Sounds just like me 😉

We had an ex pro playing sweeper he didn’t have the legs to run around but he had the football brain to see things happening and be there to stop it.

You could be offside leaning on the corner flag when the ball was on the other wing.
Not sure which is best then or now?

Total opposite now.
Most PL defenders are very good passers but can’t defend for toffee.

I never said it was wrong.
I said a first class ref would not give that in the first place.

He made a mistake that’s not first class.

I am a bit confused by the Arsenal penalty decision.
I have not seen it but
According to reports I have read it is a penalty in European competitions but would not be given in the premier league!

Are there a different set of laws in different competitions or is this just excuses to cover for referee/VAR errors?

I cannot understand this, can anyone help explain this to me cause I’m so confused.
It’s always confusing when no-one is appealing for a penalty and VAR gets involved.
