Clattenburg was wrong from multiple angles, multiple views and multiple speeds

So I wont be too harsh on the referee who made a decision on something that happened very rapidly.

Clattenburg is a muppet always was.

But a FIFA ref was three yards away.
I don’t think it was handball but he did until someone else pointed it out to him.

Thought he was bad generally I have never seen a top ref get in the way of a game so much as him.

Can't say I really noticed the ref much tonight, apart from the VAR incident

It’s not first class at all he gave handball and he was wrong from three yards.

Assuming VAR went down the route of it being a clear and obvious error, either the handball itself or the fact it might have been in the area, they were spot on to ask the referee to review it.

And having done so, to overturn his decision, to the detriment of Liverpool at home, with the incident occurring in front of the Kop, was absolutely first class.

We all know most referees cave in in such circumstances. It is precisely why their overturning of blatantly incorrect on field decisions is so rare, as is their sticking with on-field decisions when VAR suggest they take another look.

Absolutely first class refereeing. Take the Liverpool FC blinkers off.

I thought the ref had a pretty decent game.
He let a bit go which I always like to see and didn’t blow every time someone just fell over.
I think Madrid are not a good team but are full of individuals who can create a goal out of nothing.
Liverpool looked right up for it and made sure they doubled up whenever they could and Madrid seemed to slow the game down which let Liverpool get back and organised behind the ball.
Good night for all our sides in Europe

I am a bit confused by the Arsenal penalty decision.
I have not seen it but
According to reports I have read it is a penalty in European competitions but would not be given in the premier league!

Are there a different set of laws in different competitions or is this just excuses to cover for referee/VAR errors?

I cannot understand this, can anyone help explain this to me cause I’m so confused.

I didn’t see the game last night, but when ever I’ve seen him play i’ve never been overly impressed.
He was absolutely abysmal last night. I've seen some good stuff from him in the past, but he was truly shocking last night.

In fairness, Bradley absolutely bossed him all game. But, given it was obvious things were not working out for Junior, there just seemed a complete lack of football intelligence to try anything different. He just kept doing the same thing over and over, and failed. Always fell at the first hurdle as well, didn't ever get close to getting the upper hand in any move. I was even more surprised that his team mates kept passing to him in the second half.

Bradley had him in his pocket. Was equally impressive defending and going forward. I get you need a squad but Frimpong/Kerkez should get near first choice full backs ahead of Robertson and him.
100% agree with this, I think Slot changed too much too quickly, Bradley and Robertson are still there best fullbacks.

That was the first time in a while where VAR has been used properly

I suspect that the ref initially thought the ball hit the outstretched hand hence giving the free kick

When VAR checked and you can see that the ball hit the hand close to the body and it was in the area then it’s potentially a penalty and the referee was giving the opportunity to check - which he did and came to the right call - it wasn’t a penalty

But no idea why it wasn’t a corner 🤔

Referee was good last night , didn’t get sucked in by Madrid throwing themselves to the floor - shame he didn’t give Vinicius JR the second yellow for his blatant embarrassing dive in the penalty area

European referees/directives given by UEFA to their referees seem to operate under a much lower bar when it comes to handball.

Anything where the ball brushes a hand, no matter how inadvertent, no matter how impossible it was to avoid, will be given as a penalty.

That's how Newcastle were robbed by PSG of victory in the last minute of their game in France a couple of years ago.

Why do pundits and reporters keep referring to outdated positions such as 'Number 10' or 'Number 6' when describing the best position for certain players? Squad number have been in the PL for 30 years so most young fans won't have a clue what they are on about.

Possibly because it's really only the PL that has such large squards and numbers. Most amateur footy I have seen is numbered 1-11. so I imagine most understand those positions in relation to the number.

Or do they just play left back, or centre midfield or up front? Do those who coach young teams really tell a player to play Number 6?

I got my coaching badges and when I was involved with the teams we never in a million years told some to play a numbered position. We’d say holding role in front of the CB, your playing g just off the striker with a freedom to move wide to create space etc. nothing ever done by numbers.

It’s a modern fad of commentating to try and be relevant. It’s a bit like YouTube golfers the current fad seems to the phrase “turf interaction” is everywhere to sound relevant and intelligent, just talk about taking a divot 🤣
