I had a ticket for this evening but had to collect my mum from hospital so couldn’t make it. Despite the result, I’m actually pleased to have watched largely from behind the sofa.
The day before a mate text me to see if I wanted to go to a pub to watch the game. I said no, I now make a point of trying not to watch Man Utd in public.

Also despite the result, glad I made that decision.

I very much expected a performance like that. In the past, against top sides, Utd have shown they can work hard when focusing on defending.

But, when they play games where they are expected to attack, often a very different story. Impotent at scoring goals. Not sure if it is because many of our attackers are young and/or slightly built. If they can find space, they can be dangerous, although decision making can be questioned. But, if defenders get tight to them and get physical, it is really tough. Utd players seem to lack the strength to ward off many challenged, or the power to really drive away from defender that's all over them. Whatever reason, often seem to get edgy and get tackled, or rush a pass that gets intercepted.

I question Zirkzee in general, but last night he made a really positive difference. He had the strength against the defenders, and did well to keep attacks going. Hojlund has shown he is capable in past, but he was way off it. Looked like he had run a marathon before kick off.

I expected us to huff and puff breaking Southampton down. We struggle if we have to play on the front foot.

What is didn’t expect was to be pinned back in our own third for large parts of the game by a team with only six points on the board with over half the season gone. I didn’t expect that at all, and it’s a real worry.

There was just no outlet at all until, surprisingly, Zirkzee came on. He held the ball up really well and brought those running beyond him into the game. And those runners had also been absent until very late in the game. Even on the odd occasion when Hojlund got hold of the ball there were no runners from midfield, and certainly no sign of either wingback.

A really insipid performance, both defensively and going forward.

Mike "no ambition" Ashley.
I think the one difference with Ashley is he at least left Newcastle without debt. He didn't invest but he didn't rig the club to suck money out. He clearly made money, but he didn't do a Glazers to the club.

He's in the mix, for sucking all ambition from the club, but there are worse out there.

What’s the story with LFC owners Arthur? (FSG…?)

Reason I ask is cos since the Forest Liverpool game the other night I’ve seen a lot of posts on my Twitter timeline from LFC fans.

Have seen things written like “We need to strengthen but FSG won’t spend anything” and “FSG out” etc.

Usual Twitter-fan hysteria, or is there a backstory of supporter discontent there?

What shocked me, especially in first half, was the positioning of the players when Southampton keeper / defence had the ball. Seemed to be sitting back with a deep defensive line of 5.

Southampton have been known to be dodgy playing out from back. Yet we made it so easy for them by putting no pressure on them. Then, by time Southampton played it into midfield, wing backs belatedly trying to charge forward, but too late, thus leaving lots of space behind and an easy ball to play

FSG can do no wrong in some peoples eyes.

Paid £300m to buy Lpool and now worth £4Billion.

Got a nice ground though.😇

Lots of their fans think more could of been and should been spent on strengthing the Squad.

FSG like to use Man City as the way not to spend.

It’s your typical social media fans throwing toys about over transfers

Most of those with “FSGout” reside in the far or Middle East etc and are more fans of the transfer window

The club self sustains so the owners don’t spend their own money buying players and that according to those on social media means they are poor owners

We have a budget based on the income and the club with Edwards at the helm are very thorough when it comes to signings and contracts etc

It’s all very pathetic

They're in the best position for years and still haven't spent, can see they need a few additions to see them over the line. Such a weird way of doing business, get it spent.

Seems more of a business model than a Football Club, I can admire what they’ve done, but, I believe could of helped Klopp a bit more.

They don’t need to spend

We have a full squad with one short term injury and cover in all areas

Just because the window is open doesn’t mean players need to come in

They will be looking at the transfers for the summer

Don't need a bit of cover at the back? Carragher has been banging on about a centre half?

Just heard on the radio that Haaland has signed a 9 and a half year contract at City, keeping him there until 2034. That is a big commitment, although wonder how many clauses he has in that contract

Does this mean they will need money from Salah/TAA/VVD sales this window instead of losing them for free in the summer? To balance the books you needs sales as well as purchases.

As is there right

But always interesting to know who they think is better run and has the success with it

And also who they expect to see buy the club to do any better
Maybe it’s because things like Nett Spend and Oil money gets thrown about.

When Klopp left he had 1/2 the Nett Spend of Pep, but only a 1/4 of the Trophies.

The season you won the League and CL many believe he should of been given more to spend and to keep yous at the top.

There are many ways to breakdown spending etc, but it can’t be denied just how much FSG have made on their initial investment and some would like to see more of it spent on players.
