England call up Ezri Konsa after the injury withdrawals.

So well deserved, a really great defender with a lot of ability and in fantastic form.
Whilst I agree with the call-ups this morning....how on EARTH is JWP still not called up? Sleeping with Southgate's wife, I presume; because there's no other logical explanation.

It’s GS your talking about.
Logic dosnt come into it!

Is the young lad Palmer English he was amazing yesterday.
if so get him in now.

To be fair until yesterday JWP was having a slight blip but that was mainly due to the teams result than his ability

I agree he should be in the squad

But then can't argue with who he's called up on standby

All very odd

It's like he doesn't want JWP as he isn't young enough to be the future and trusts who he uses already to be the now

I don't know too much about JWPs general game in open play. But, if he is able to do the same job as Henderson or Phillips, surely he should be in the side. You then have a set piece specialist. Although perhaps Southgate sees TAA as that guy, and doesn't want both?

He is a Wythenshawe lad so unless he is going off his parents / grandparents he will play for England. If there is any wobbling with another country knocking on the door, Gareth should play him against Malta this Friday and seal the deal.

As much as I think Ward-Prowse deserves to be in the squad - just on the basis that good performances are supposed to earn you a call-up - I still have this lingering suspicion that aside from free kicks and corners, and the odd cross, he doesn't offer a huge amount in open play. So while he deserves to be in the squad, he's not good enough to start. And is there much point having a set piece merchant on the bench? Perhaps you sub him on in a game you're struggling to add to the set piece threat, but I don't know. I could sort of understand Southgate thinking he doesn't offer as much. Although he's probably watched him play about as much as I have, which is not a lot. 😆

He's better than you're giving him credit for.

His goal contributions do come from dead ball situations but his overall play is of a very high level too.

Why would i admit he shouldve been sent off today when i dont believe he should've? It wasnt a even a yellow never mind a red.

It was a 50/50 tackle both players looked to have went in with the same amount of force and Norgaard (i think it was) didnt win the ball. Legs clashed and that was it.

There's the tackle. You still think it was a red?
I agree. I've seen that tackle just now because of the "fuss". Nothing to see for me, just two guys going in for a tackle.

Whilst I'm here, the term "intent" was replaced in the Laws by terms such as attempt, deliberate, excessive, careless, reckless, etc. Therefore the referee is allowed to decide "intent" but only under those terms I've just mentioned. Law 12 if someone wants to brush-up ;).

Ok I've just looked up a video of the Endo challenge. Honestly - I don't think that's a red card. He slides with one foot, and tries to play the ball with the side of his foot even (rather than studs forward if you see what I mean). The opposing player tries to do exactly the same thing. His studs have caught him a bit on the way through, but surely we can't just be giving out red cards EVERY time a stud catches someone? There has to be a line in the sand somewhere? Otherwise you're just not going to see any slide tackles anymore as it wouldn't be worth the risk. Both players made the same challenge essentially, it's just luck which one of them takes a hit from it.

Yes that’s exactly how I see it.

The lad deserves a go imo.
Hes playing very well that’s why his team are doing well.
But we’re talking GS.
His crosses would be good for England given we are quite strong in the air.

The problem is, is that many referees / VAR will give a red as soon as a stud hits an ankle. There have been many more harmless challenges than that one that have been given red. Often VAR can't wait to recommend a red. On the other hand, you can get extremely reckless challenges where a player knows they'll wipe out an opponent, but they get away with it as studs didn't make contact (thinking Havertz).

So, any player going in for a tackle, whether it be a slide tackle or block tackle, run the risk of getting a red card if their studs make contact. You can even have the ridiculous situation where one player might actually go into it a bit more recklessly, but due to timing the studs actually go into their ankle, and so the other guy gets sent off.

It probably won't be long before slide tackles are banned to be fair. I've seen many, where the player has won the ball cleanly and then made a bit of contact with the player (not dangerous contact), and a foul is given against them and maybe even a yellow card. The lawmakers like to continually change things, keep themselves busy and probably feel like they earn their well paid salaries.

Yeah, the criteria seems completely wrong at the minute. I said it last week - they've basically removed 'intent' from the thought process because they can't see that on a super slow motion replay - they need an actual ref to judge intent so we can't use that anymore. Stupid.

Yes, just in case Jack Grealish gets on the pitch.

We were discussing Southgate on Saturday night, what team would have him as a manager when he leaves the England job?
We all agreed not a top job, I suggested Palace or similar, a couple of other lads reckoned the Championship 😱

I wouldn’t say championship, but definitely not a top prem team.
And reckon he’d fail tbh.
So probably championship after that.
Imagine him with a cheque book.
He’d sign a 40yr old Henderson & Phillips.

Same as he was before - lower mid-table and relegation-threatened teams. He sets the England team up like one of them anyway, it's the only way he knows how.

And yet….he has had the most ‘success’ as manager with an England team for a long while.
