So why can't he do that for England? Have Chilwell overlapping to give width. Having a player who can do that is a good idea isn't it? Gives opponents a problem to think about.

It depends how many people you want doing that. It has already been mentioned that Kane wanders around. Bellingham gets himself about. Do England want one of their wide men wandering about as well?

If it's that against 'stepover and kick it hard' Rashford then yes please. I want intelligent footballers in the England side who use space well. As long as Rice sits in position the others can be as fluid as they like. (Appreciate this is not the 'Southgate way' but I'm talking about my England team here.)

In fairness to Rashford, he is the same guy who scored an excellent goal in the last game. And he is the player who has shown how dangerous he can be. It is up to the manager to decide which one of his players will work best in each game, he has several good options.
I mean, I'm not a professional football coach. However, surely to goodness a football team needs some sort of structure to it in order to execute a plan???? You can't seriously suggest that as long as one person sits in a defensive midfield position, then everyone else can be as fluid as they like (at least everyone beyond the defence). If Kane is the type of player that likes to drop deep, it is a hell of an advantage to him if he knows with virtual certainty that the left or right sided player are in a position to receive a through ball. It doesn't work too well if he tries to play a quick ball down the left, only to find that Foden had just been fluid and was somewhere else entirely on the pitch.
I'm sure Foden would do a fine job on the left, but he has the intelligence to know that if he is playing in that position, then he needs to play that position. He can't be a fancy Dan and just do what he thinks is best. If Kane was the type of striker to permanently sit up top, then that would probably give licence for another player to have a free role behind him.

He did a stepover and kicked it hard. Keeper should have saved it, it wasn't in the corner. He's an impact sub at absolute best. If It wasn't Foden starting on the left I'd have Grealish.
I think Pep has debunked this. As long as a player knows his job and position when out of possession, he can be given freedom when attacking. Foden is an intelligent player, he's not just going to wander around like a headless chicken is he? If he needs to get in the box he'll get in the box. Personally I think he'd work well with Maddison at number 10. Maddison does a lot of his best work drifting out from there to the left side, so you'd see the two players changing position seamlessly.
He could if the tactics allowed him to. When he plays there for England he seems tied to the line so I can only assume that he is under orders to stay wide

One thing about Pep, City, Foden. The rest of the team. They are intelligent players. They don’t just play one position. They play out of position but other players know and see that, they are coached that. Coached that if Foden cuts infield there’s a gap that can be exploited should City lose possession. That gap needs to be filled. Players like Ake and Stones have been immense in how they have adapted to the City way of playing.
Then put Foden, Saka, and a few others in the England set up/ team and it seriously goes tits Up.You have intelligent players that are not being pushed. They have gone from playing level five to level 3. With a manager that’s at level 3.
Look at Kane how he drops to midfield to get involved. If he was at City doing that pep would have a stroke. That’s not his job, that’s not his role. Talking of Kane, look how the manager at Spurs is thriving without him. Look at Villa how they are thriving without Grealish.
At England level we have Bellingham, Rice, Foden, Saka, Maddison, Grealish etc etc that can create, yet Kane drops to Midfield. There’s only one reason for that. Southgate. Them players i mentioned are intelligent enough to play left right and centre with out being confined to one wing. They are intelligent enough to rip teams apart playing attractive football with a solid defensive unit and Keeper behind them, yet we don’t. And that is down to one man. Southgate

Re you last sentence Tash, yes it's down to Southgate but isn't it also down to how little he trusts England's defensive unit? Someone could help me here, are there any other top football nations who consistently play 2 holding midfielders like England do?

It is interesting that some fans think players should have licence to roam the pitch and cause the opposition problems, while others say that certain players should stay in strict position.
The strength of Kane is that he can drop deep. He is excellent when he gets on the ball, not selfish and his team can exploit that strength as it creates space for other players. I'd imagine if he played for City, Pep would have absolutely loved that in Kane. Didn't City often play without an out and out striker before Haaland came along? Kane would have been the perfect fit, but they got Haaland. Pep knows that Haaland is a very very different type of player, and so he has adapted the way City play to ensure they get the best out of Haaland. He is a great manager, so of course he has done this.
In fairness to Southgate, he gets to work with players once every 2 or 3 months. Pep does so every day. I'm sure building those type of relationships between players is not straightforward. I'm critical of Southgate, but less so in the less pressurised games of qualifying. They expect to win most of them, but at least they meet those expectations (other England managers have not). They generally seem to score goals and concede few, so I don't really expect too much more from them. My critical comments are regarding when the pressure is on, win or go home, and then I think Southgate is overly conservative. I personally feel he'd increase his odds of winning if he played with a bit more ambition, but I also think it is fair to say he might be lacking in that offensive tactical area. Probably unfair to compare him to Pep anyway. How many managers are genuinely on his level?

Betting on his own team to lose would have been a whole different kettle of fish.
Yea that would’ve been next level, they’d have been investigating what he was leaking to the other team at that stage or finding teammates to implicate.

That would have been even worse, yes. But I do find the all-or-nothing rules a bit strong. Understand not being able to bet on your own team, or even your own league. But why can a Premier League player not bet on League One/Two, or bet on matches happening in Germany and Spain?
It draws a clear line on things. No grey areas, no 'I thought I could.......'. It's as clear as can be, don't do it.
Friends with people at the clubs. Too much chance of insider knowledge.
