I wouldn't get carried away with one result against an Italian side who many seem to think are average at best.

It was a good performance, albeit Phillips seemed a strange choice.

The proof will be when he gets to a tournament, and is able to beat one of the best teams. That is where he has failed up to now, with an England side with some excellent players.
Im not, I’m basing on his successes to date & he is the 2nd most successful, after Alf Ramsey.

So for someone who doesn’t know what he’s doing he has done pretty well.

As much as I criticised the lethargy on Friday it is only fair that I am more positive about tonights game. The team showed a lot more sharpness, pace, quick direct passing and played with tempo. Yes we dropped off defensively for the goal and Stones just watched Scamacca put the ball in. Recovered well from that setback and thoroughly deserved the win.

I dont get all the Rashford bashing, whenever he gets the ball he tries to make something happen and my English heart beats a tad quicker when he is on the ball and he took his goal really well. Yes he sometimes runs down a blind alley...unlike Grealish who sadly cant find the entrance to the alley....a case in point was on 85 mins when England had a 4 on 3 break, the ball went out to Grealish on the left, he was in acres of space, had just the one man in front of him and huge space behind that defender, yet before the ball had even reached him, he was looking backwards to where he was going to take or play the ball. The move ground to a halt and three passes later the ball was back with the defence.

To be fair, he is successful. Won a lot of trophies as a manager :)

Just because many other England managers have been a shambles, I'm not sure that should give Southgate a pass. I can't imagine Brazilians, Italians, Spanish, Argentines, French, Germans, etc praise managers who managed to be a beaten finalist.

Let’s be honest those teams you quoted are not what they used to be in other decades.

The standard of international football has declined imo.

True but they can field an entire team of world class footballers. England can’t!
So success is qualification for major tournaments, getting out of group stages and getting to semi/finals.
Which he’s done.

GS problem is he doesn't change tactics when we get to the quarters or semis , it's the same boring slow, slow slow slow slow in build up .
It's a let's not lose syndrome ,not a let's get at em and tear em a new one .
Southgate needs a new job soon as, and it's not managing the national team .
Bloke can't even take a penalty 😱

Tournaments by and large aren’t won by fast, expansive football. It’s attritional.

I know, let's go and play expansive football against Brazil, Argentina or Spain...it'll be fun to see just how good they are when given space to play.

I always thought that has been England's problem in my lifetime. They are more fearful of what the big teams can do against them, and lack belief what they can bring to the party themselves. Maybe the only time England looked to be positive was Euro 96. They got beat in semi, but there was still pride in their performance.

Whereas I doubt a team like Brazil ever fear playing the big teams. Sure, they get eliminated from more tournaments than they win, but when they win, it is because that is what they set out to do. They didn't set out not to lose.

That's because Brazil are a big team. We aren't.
