For me, it's more about stating you will pick players on form and if you aren't playing regularly you wont be considered.
He talks a crock, so I am done with Southgate.
They did a piece on this a couple of weeks ago on the radio, where they actually played what he had said a few years ago. I cannot remember the actual words he said, but he didn't actually say form was the only reason to pick players. He simply mentioned that as being an important part of the decision making. It seems like media and fans have simply cherry picked certain words from what he said, and then created a false narrative to then bash him when he picks players they don't like.

And, clearly, form is not the only reason to pick players. I don't know about you guys, but if Harry Kane doesn't score a goal in a month and Danny Welbeck scores 8 for Brighton, I'm still picking Kane next time England have an important game. If Real Madrid don't win a game in a month and Bellingham hasn't been at his best, I'm still picking Bellingham over any other central midfielder to be honest.

Southgate obviously just loves Henderson as a person. They may even be close friends by now, who knows. He just likes having him around, and that's the only possible reason to continue picking him.

I've been listening to the Rest Is Football podcast (Lineker, Shearer and Richards - it's actually very good), and Lineker said something that rang true for me. Henderson needs to take it out of Southgate's hands at this stage. As much as he loves playing for his country, he should do the honourable thing and retire from internationals, immediately taking the pressure off Southgate to drop him. I do believe it would end the chat about his move to Saudi Arabia as well, because whatever you think of that, it would be a case of out of sight out of mind. If he's not cropping up in England squads, we'll forget he exists before very long.

And of those 2 examples you use, which of them isn't in the first 11 every week, and which of them has been injured for a very long time and only just returned back to play?
You can't defend the indefensible.

I was explaining and demonstrating why the buzz word of "form" is not the only reason you pick a player in your side. I gave my personal opinion on Maguire, Phillips and Henderson just before that post.

If Henderson is there just for his changing room banter why does he keep playing him.
He was Captain last weekend.
He played last night second half.
So he’s there as a player in front of many other players playing in the PL.
that’s what seems strange to me.
But GS is in charge and all managers make strange selections now and again.

As a long standing critc of Southgate the main issue for me is he hasn't learnt anything from all the years he's been in the job.

He's done so many good things but his obsession with pointless possession, 2 defensive midfielders and in game management are things that have actually got worse. Apart from the first game we were poor in Qatar, just passing it about between the centre backs and Pickford. Whenever we stepped it up we looked devastating. It was the same last night, once we went behind we suddenly started playing quicker and should've scored more.

I can forgive him for being loyal to Maguire and Henderson who haven't let him down but he needs to be a little bit more attack minded and improve his in game mamagement. Either stick or twist, instread of being too scared to make the call and doing nothing. Against Ukraine recently he was happy to play for a 0-0 draw. The team has clearly outgrown his ability but even with him we've still got a very good chance of winning in Germany.

The first bold bit highlights his main problem, the second bold bit asks the question in which the first bold bit answers the question.

The last bold bit is my line of thinking that the players can do a job, but not if he picks some of his regulars.
