It must be in every managers DNA that they always have at least 1 favourite who will always get picked irrespective of performances.

So, Scotland fans, what happened?
I've not seen Scotland competitive games, as some other broadcaster has the rights now that I'm not paying for (so can't even see my N Ireland play anymore). But, they've obviously done well, and McTomminay has been a goal machine.
Yet, last night, they were awful in comparison to England. Couldn't get near the ball for most of the game, in a home match. Just a bad night at office, or is it just a level.they will struggle to reach?

Not impressed with Southgate’s pop at the fans and the media over the criticisms of Maguire. Irrespective of whether or not those criticisms are accurate, having a pop at the fans isn’t wise. And taking on the media, who go a long way towards forming public opinion, could backfire. The media’s treatment of Faldo, following his “heart of my bottom” speech, was brutal.

You only have to see instances in the past when a manager has moved clubs a particular player has then followed him from club A to B to C to D that managers have players who they feel fit their philosophy more than others.

In Maguires defence he has to play that ball.
No defender can let that go.
It was a lazy leg , but the lad can’t be match fit with his lack of playing time.
He dosnt complain . He is obviously trying his best.!
Imo there is only one person to blame and that’s GS.
He keeps putting the lad in the team knowing his fitness and confidence are low.
Atm there are better options
Its just hard to watch any footballer struggle like this.

A match is one or two games a week. Training is constant. Match fitness is drastically oversold as an issue.

Wasn’t it “coming home” under Southgate 
Southgate got very lucky to get the job , he jumped in on a temp basis and then people got carried away with the World Cup run where they didn’t beat a single team of note and managed to get to the semi
Then the Euros he bottled the final - 1 shot on goal after going 1 up
The golden generation is talked about a lot but the bunch they have now is far better and with a better manager they would have at least won that Euros
Imagine what Pep or Klopp or even Howe would have done with those players - Southgate had zero track record of success.

Matches give you sharpness. I've no doubt Maguire is fully fit but what he wont have is that sharpness that gives you an edge, that gets you there a split second before your opponent. That is what he is missing.
He’s missing footballing ability at the top level.
That's a separate discussion. I think he could do a job for England in the past but there are others that have passed him now. I think GS is picking him out of stubbornness, to show he is the boss, not the press. Dunk has earned his place after last nice, alongside Stones.

Maguire is a centre back that can throw himself into tackles and head a ball out etc
He is the perfect sort of centre back for a West Ham , Burnley etc but not for a team playing a high line or looking to pass the ball out from the back

I disagree, ten Haag and Yernited are much more culpable. He's 5th choice CB now for them. If Southgate doesnt pick him the pressure on him intensifies on Maguire. I think Southgate has only picked him to try to protect him.
Worst thing that couldve happened for Maguire was his move to West Ham collapsing and staying at Yernited. The focus is now on him.
Wasn't that ultimately down to him? He wanted more of a payoff from Utd and when he didn't get it he dug his heels in. That was the report. He could be playing regularly if he wanted it.

Exactly. He must be as thick as he looks if he couldn't work out how that would've been the perfect move for him and his career. Then again, apparently bench at Utd still gets you more England caps than playing for West Ham.

Agreed. He, not for the first time, completely lost his bearings. He was weirdly off balance - threw his arm up and for a second I thought he was appealing for off-side, but it was just a strange movement as he wasn't balanced.
He'll win his share of headers and hoof the ball up the park - that's what he's good at, and there are plenty of English defenders who offer much more.

Forget for one minute GS and Maguire and think about players and managers in General.
If a manager comes out with statements, but then does the polar opposite.
eg, “ If he is not playing for his club, then he don’t play for England”.
” he don’t play in the middle of the park for his club ( when he did the week before against Newcastle) so he could struggle for England”. Yet the same manager then plays other players out of position on a regular basis.
” I don’t get the unwarranted criticism of said player”. When it is generally accepted said player/s are not the best”.
I could continue. When you come out as a manager, whoever you are with comments like that. You are setting yourself up for criticism .
On top of that. To play a friendly and not look at other players is a cardinal sin.
Then look at a player. Any player.
If he is not playing football, any football, not just regular football. How can we gauge how good he is. What would be the outcry if say Pickford was the goalkeeper for England but had never put on a shirt at Everton for 12 months. We compare Pickford with Pope and others because we see them play, every week.
A player/ s get in the England squad because they have never let us down and is good in the squad as a senior player. I suppose Bobby Charlton is now putting some dubbin on his boots as we talk. Where do you draw the line. I get Maguire is lucky to be playing, given he isn't playing for his club. But the focus on him has become absurd.
He may not be a Rio Ferdinand, blessed with a bit of pace. But he has generally been solid at England. Utd have been farcical at the back without Maguire, indicating their issues are much more widespread that having Maguire at the back. He has simply become the pantomime villain. If England start slowing the tempo, apparently it is Maguire's fault!!!!! Clearly no team is going to have the energy to gungho attack for 90 minutes, and when they slowed tempo the midfielders were not making the runs to receive that ball of Maguire. I thought Maguire was generally good on the ball, and made some good passes, which was surprising as he must be rusty. But all that is ignored, and and hesitation is pounced on by fans and media.

I suppose I can understand Maguire staying at United. he does not strike me as one who will have a managerial or coaching career nor someone who would make a great pundit and so his time in the sport, and maybe his working life, ends with his playing career. I know they receive abnormal amounts of money but he has his life and family to think about. If there is any truth in the figures, he would have lost £4-5 million by moving and United were not willing to pay that out. How many people would throw away £5 million on the off chance that a move to West Ham would turn everything around.
