Well, Spurs ruling themselves out of one trophy already. Harry Kane is probably a little more relieved, I'm sure he'd get a bit of stick had Spurs won a trophy the year after he left.

Just to add fuel to the fire, here’s another angle on players from different eras. What does make me chuckle is once more it’s from the “ Premier league era”. It’s like Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton etc never existed before the saviour of football ( Premier League) came along.

Arteta wants a completely different skill set to the one Tierney offers (ie traditional left back). Tierney defends well, and gets forward overlapping and crossing into the box. We tried it a couple of years ago, crossed the ball more than any other side, almost never scored from them. Nowadays the left back is expected to try and be a defending left back but when we have possession is expected to be more central and slot into midfield. If arteta was going to use Tierney I expect it would be at left centre half rather than left back these days but recent purchases have jumped him in the pecking order for both positions (ie Timber albeit now injured, Kiwior and Tomiyasu now fit again)
For a different side he will be a great asset if he stays fully fit, expect he'll do well at Sociedad this season then move on permanently next year

To be fair, I'm not even sure extending it to before the PL would do pre-PL players justice. Considering the broadcasting and advertising money exploded once the PL started (especially for top clubs), and then you have Russian billionaires and nation states buying clubs and able to spend massively over the odds.Always found it interesting reading the comparisons between footballers from different eras. As for the players you mentioned, Bobby Moore was pretty much at West Ham most of his career. When he moved to Fulham for £25,000, that was significantly below the record transfer fee at around that time, of £350,000 (Bob Latchford). Bobby Charlton was at Man Utd most of his career, although I believe was player-manager for a bit at Preston afterwards. So they wouldn't have been on the list anyway, just like plenty of great players (e.g. Scholes, Gerrard)

The last 2 players you name... What someone would pay for a 25-27 year old Scholes/Gerrard now is mind boggling. Whatever your allegiances, 2 outstanding and wonderful footballers.

It probably more to do with a writer having too much time on their hands. Simply pick a benchmark that suits the argument one wants to make and use that. For example, Trevor Francis (first £1million player if anyone needed reminding) cost approx 830 times the weekly wage of the then highest earning player. Use that multiplier on current wages and 'record transfers' should be in excessof £400 million. IT is and that’s why I mentioned pre Premier league. I suppose the initial story was written by someone who is 18 yrs old and does not remember football prior to the Premier league

It is obviously a fairly trivial article, that is used to generate a bit of a discussion. Nothing more than that. If you Google "most expensive footballers after inflation" you can find all sorts of lists with different players on them. One stand out one was published in The Sun, where the Top 7 transfers of all time were to Italian clubs, including Ronaldo (Brazilian), Maradona, Platini, Vieri, Van Basten, Batistuta and Higuain. Then I read their source was from Italian market analysts PlayRatings, who came up with the algorithm. No bias there then.

The first half was embarrassing. We couldn't hold the ball, couldn't put 3 passes together, had no threat. Subs were made in the second half, very different display.
I still worry greatly about our ability to hold possession, protect the ball, but at least we had more zip in the second half. Beto, again only against Doncaster, also looked the part. He gave us something we haven't had since DCL was last fit, 2 and a bit seasons ago now
On matters City, how many midfielders are you buying? Is Pep looking at Chelsea and feeling left out? I get buying the odd one, you have sold a few, but I thought you might bring a few young ones through this year

To be honest am dead excited about the players he has signed, more so the players he has managed to keep. Cole Palmer, if City get £45 million for him I will do cartwheels. Kovacic has fitted in seamlessly, he could be the signing of the season.Doku is like no player we have. Rico Lewis is one who can be a good player given time. If Palmer is worth £45 million , Mcateer is worth £50 million. Gobsmacked no one has gone for him. Ansu Fati on loan to Brighton seems like an interesting one.
Very good player technically but injury has pretty much put paid to his Barca starting place that he had nailed a couple of season ago.
That and Lamine Yamal’s emergence.

Reading the BBC article it says something when players are choosing Brighton (no offence to Brighton) over spurs because of their style
Missing Europe of any kind is going to make it harder for spurs to sign people , will be a case of overpaying wages which levy hates
