Yep I'm not sure where Phillips fit as it would seem to be Rodri's role and he's had a great season. Maybe Pep had some doubts there.

I forgot in all the bathing in glory how refreshing it was for both Jack and Rodri to say how rubbish they'd played. Pep sets high standards and clearly the players buy into that 100%. Also Pep imploring them to "relax" - he looked so concerned for them, not the team or result, but the individuals who were letting the moment and pressure affect their ability.

I may have said it but I'll repeat it. I love Pep

It will get easier. There was such pressure on City to with the CL with so many pundits saying that they could not be seen as a success until they do. Any appearances in the final in future will allow them to play without that monkey on their back.

Do you think it's possible that Stones stepping forward into that midfield role was possibly where Phillips would've fitted in if Stones hadn't been able to do that job?

I just don’t see Phillips being good enough for City, I was very puzzled when they bought him He’s a canny player but he doesn’t have the on the balls skills you need in that midfield.

England only had two representatives in Europe for their first season back; First Division runners-up Aston Villa in the UEFA Cup and FA Cup winners Manchester United in the Cup Winners’ Cup. The gradual re-introduction was because England had no UEFA coefficient points, due to being out of European competition for so long. Basically every other country had overtaken them. This meant that in 1990/91, 3rd and 4th placed Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal missed out on UEFA Cup qualification, along with League Cup winners Nottingham Forest. For the same reason, in 1991/92, Crystal Palace, Leeds United and League Cup winners Sheffield Wednesday missed out. In 1992/93, the League Cup winners got their spot back in the UEFA Cup, but two more still missed out in the league, in Arsenal and Manchester City. Same again in 1993/94, with Blackburn Rovers and QPR not making it. In 1994/95, another place was gained in the league which meant just Leeds were denied UEFA Cup football. By 1995/96, European qualification was back to normal in England for the first time in ten seasons.

That's a fair point. Feel for Phillips as clearly he's a decent player.

I just don’t see Phillips being good enough for City, I was very puzzled when they bought him He’s a canny player but he doesn’t have the on the balls skills you need in that midfield.

I was watching the final on a Polish TV channel while at work and one of the things I commented on during the game was how comfortable all of the City players looked when on the ball. I would agree that Phillips would be a significant downgrade on anyone else in that midfield but Pep obviously sees something in him and I'm happy to concede that he knows a bit more about football than I do.

Just to change direction slightly.... no doubt Pep is a good manager, but how do you think he'd do managing a Tottenham or Everton type team for example?

For me until he manages a "lesser" team I'll always have an open question about him.... as its all well and good managing the teams that "should" win things in their own leagues with an open cheque book.

I'd like to see him work with a constrained budget.

So you are including clubs after the ban was lifted that didn’t get European Football - ok fair enough . But if the places weren’t there as any guarantee before the season started then the clubs know the situation.

Heysel happened and was the final straw in a lot of issues and was going to happen and it’s something that will always be a stain on the club and something we never be forgotten

But Palace not making it in 91 - then fingers can be pointed at the FA as they were the ones looking to get Liverpool back in after the extra year ban and there were no guarantees in regards 3rd getting a place in Europe if Liverpool finished 2nd - only assumptions

This is a question that I do often ask myself. I think that the result in my mind is that he would massively improve the team in most areas and that is all that you can ask. Would he win things, unlikely as the winners are normally the big spenders but he would certianly make the team better.

Come on mate stop deflecting, no matter how poor the stadium was, the fact of the matter is had scummy Liverpool fans not charged Juventus fans then 39 people would still be alive. I think UEFA would have been ok with just a other terrace battle (Juve fans were no saints from what I’ve read) but for the fans to cause deaths, that’s way past anything acceptable, I’m struggling to see how you even partially try and deflect blame away from the Liverpool fans that night.

Because of what Liverpool did that night, around 20 clubs finishing in qualifying positions to play in Europe in that following 5 years lost the right to do so through no fault of their own, and then the powers that be decided to reduce the extra ban on Liverpool from 2 to 1, so Palace became another loser - all the clubs who lost out have a right to be angry

Exactly how we feel. 85/86 Season we had our best ever finish…3rd.
Should have qualified for the UEFA cup the following year but was disqualified because of the Heysel disaster.

This was the beginning of my contempt of Liverpool fc.

I think this is the answer for me. He improves players wherever he goes, he gets his teams playing great football, time and time again. Lots of clubs have spent money and wasted it, lots have top players and don't use them well. Pep has got a tune out of every team.

We should also respect the fact he has done this in different countries, no mean feat.

Sorry but no one has even suggested there was anyone else to blame that night beyond Liverpool fans - they caused what happened and caused 39 fans to die because of the charge. I don’t see anywhere any deflection in my posts for what happened that night. If the stadium wasn’t falling apart then maybe the wall wouldn’t have collapsed and that’s where UEFA accepted their issues but the actions of the fans caused 39 to die that night and nowhere have I suggested anything different

This is a nuance that not enough people acknowledge. English fans were tarring their own reputation consistently across Europe from the 70s and a ban was ever more likely with every season that passed. Heysel was an awful catalyst for that ban, but a catalyst it was and not the root cause.

Realistically, can any manager do anything with a more mediocre club. In most of the big leagues in Europe, unless you are at a very limited number of clubs, you are not going to win anything. A performance like Nwecastle this year is about the bes that you can expect. Whilst I understand why it is in in place, that is the big downside of FFP. Any team with asprirations (and the funds) to reach the top, can only spend so much. They are competing against teams with a long history of winning and so they have the global audiences spending money and those global audiences allow the big money sponsorship deals. Those are the things that a normal team looking to reach the top cannot achieve. A chicken and egg situation, you need to spend big to reach the top but you need to be at the top to get the global support and spnsorship deals that allow you the revenue to spend. With the biggest backers in the world, Pep would be hamstrung on what he could achieve.
