The game has moved on, we’ve had plenty of discussions about goalscorers or certain players that would or would not “fit in” in the current game.

A lot of our thoughts, feelings about current teams or our teams are based on our age and what we’ve experienced.
And I am sure there is a generation before us that saw the Busby babes and World Cup 66, and they would raise an eyebrow at football a decade later.
For me, the Golden years of English football was when Utd, Liverpool, Forest and Villa were dominating European football. At that time City were battering York and Gillingham 😖

Rivalries are irrelevant nobody is talking about rivalries. We’re discussing modern boring football compared to days of yore when everyone played with proper wingers, 4-4-2 and had a pop at each other. Nobody does that and so far Arsenal are winning because they’ve found a way to get results against the constant low block. The irony is if they bottled the season and City win with their brand of absolute boredom, fans won’t talk about City being boring and winning they’ll be lauded as Champions who found a way to win and Arsenal will be constantly talked about as boring and bottlers.

I refer to my original comment I find the hypocrisy and irony of all football fans comical.

The rivalries are what creates the brand of football that people want to see

Two teams going for it and producing exciting football that fans want to see

When you have teams that are willing to just go for it then they produce the type of football that sells the Prem all over the world

Rivalry is what pushes top managers to improve , it’s what get their blood warm

We are giving credit to the likes of United , Chelsea, Arsenal , City of past years who produced football that made people want to switch on the telly

I’m not saying they’re entertaining but I find it hilarious how bitter people come across towards them just because it’s not their team it’s kind of sad, because ultimately the football played is irrelevant points on the board matter, plus that boring side has scored the same goals as City and conceded less. What’s it they say about golf there’s no pictures on a scorecard, so exactly like a league table then 🤔🤣

Consistent bitterness from teams below them! Ok got it 🤣

Pep’s football is boring and so is Arteta ball I agree , but as above entertainment doesn’t win leagues points on the board do, so that’s all that matters. My team are playing dire football but as a fan all I care about is can we get promoted. Pretty sure Arsenal fans won’t care if they win everything 1-0 they won’t be the ones moaning but everyone else will. So who lives rent free in whose head then amongst top flite fans.
But all I can say, from what I want to get from football, is entertainment and pride.

Do I want to win trophies? Always. But if that was knowing that the football the coach wanted to play was ultra defensive, and scoring a few scrappy type goals, then I would say definitely not. I'd take the risk of having a manager who wanted to win with exciting football. After all, it is also possible to win leagues playing good football.

Of course, if we ended up in 15th and were actually awful, in hindsight I'd take boring football and winning the league for a season. Yet, I still wouldnt be happy if that style was embedded in every season.

Also, you can also play boring Arteta football and NOT win.

Nothing against being better at corners either. It would be great if Utd could score from every corner. It is more the lack of attacking, open play football that results in many goals as well. That's what makes it boring.

Besides, plenty of us have (reluctantly) given praise to previous Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and City sides of the past. So, I think it is unfair to label people as "bitter" if they ever are critical of a high flying side. Otherwise, what is the alternative? Should we have no.opinion, or always heap praise on sides higher than our team. If City win league and Arsenal second, would it be OK for City fans to call Arsenal boring, while the rest of us must consider them exciting?

Good job for you then they played dross for the last decade and didn’t win much then I guess that kept you more entertained and excited than rugby 🤔

Yes I know you’ve won a couple of cups but you can’t tell me Ten Haag did that playing good football cause I’ve watched his teams. West Ham wouldn’t have won the Europa without Moyes and his brand of boredom. The style doesn’t matter, points on the board do!

That’s akin to saying I’d rather have beautiful golf swing and no majors than have 1 major but swing like Furyk.

All that matters in golf and football is scores and points in the board that wins trophies not pretty styles! Trust me I’m a Reading fan and we have sod all trophies and play crap football!

You very obviously haven’t read much of what I’ve posted on this thread for the last decade, have you?

Because I haven’t given a toss about the fact we’ve only won the occasional cup competition during those years. What has ground my gears has been the filth my team has served up for much of that time, and the fact that I have spent stupid amounts of cash going to games only to stare in disbelief and anger at what I have been watching.

I took my lad to the Cup Final against Palace in 2016. I should have been thrilled to have been lucky enough to see my team win the FA Cup at the national stadium with my lad. The fact was the game was crap and United dodged a bullet and played typical LVG dross. It was a great day because I spent it with my boy. But it was as far from entertaining as it was possible to be.

My exact point Mr Tashmeister!! My dad was there in 66, he was there to see Utd win the European cup in 68 and he spent his formative years loving Best, Charlton etc then moaned his beloved Utd in the 90s, Who were winning basically everything were boring compared to years gone by!

Nobody here is going to be balanced enough to accept that even though he’s Arsenal are boring that if they’re the league champions that they’re the best team. Yet if England win the World Cup 1-0 every game and bore their way to victory it’ll be a master class 🤣

Correct I haven’t because I haven’t been here for a decade 🤣

But if you prefer entertaining football over trophies fair play. Hopefully get that under Carrick, but ultimately my point stands pretty football doesn’t matter. The scoreline at the end does it all the point I’m making.

No, no, no, no!

I may be a voice in the wilderness, and I get it’s all about opinions, but I just cannot agree that the football played is irrelevant. The type of football played is what it’s all about.

By the late 90’s, and I apologise if this sounds conceited because it absolutely isn’t my intention, but seeing United win largely unopposed was getting boring. Winning trophies was great, but it was becoming predictable. Thank Christ for that Arsenal side under Wenger, because they breathed life into an uncompetitive league. I wanted blood and thunder scraps for titles, not a procession.

The type of football is everything. If Man United had spent the best part of two decades winning trophies by playing dross, I’d be a rugby fan.
You’re not alone voice, it’s the voice everyone wants, but even in Utd’s heyday not every game was entertaining, the majority were, but not every one of the 38, when you are successful you forget the bad wins.

Even Carrick last night alluded to it in his post match comments, sometimes you have to win dirty.

No one said they won’t be the “best team” if they win the league

That’s not what people are saying

No the rivalries don’t create the brand of football. The manager creates it with tactics and football has evolved beyond 4-4-2 and gung ho going at each other. You’re even proving my point with your final paragraph, in that you’re giving credit to other team of the past and skewing the argument to prove your point that it was better back in the day.

At no point have I said football wasn’t better I’ve stated everyone it’s bloody boring now. But to get back in track to the actual point, Boring or not Arsenal currently lead the league as joint top scorers with a team (City) that has the most prolific striker in World football. But all that’s remember is how boring they are from fans below them!

Seriously, entertainment is what it’s about.

I’d liken it to watching an Oscar winning film. The production may walk away with an academy award, but if it doesn’t appeal to my taste I’ll still be turning off before the first commercial break.

I was going through rivalries over the years that have produced great football as well as winning trophies-

It was only 3 seasons ago Pep and Klopp were going at it and the season was exciting

Pep himself saying it was the best time going up against Klopp

Right now and for the last two years there has been none of that sort of battle between teams

When they faced each other they didn’t sit back waiting for a set piece , they went at each other

A league table just shows the team that’s picked up the most points , it doesn’t show if a team has been one that will be remembered for the brand of football they played

Last seasons Slot team won’t be remembered , Artetas Arsenal won’t be remembered
The last few years has seen a better PL and the reason I say that is because other teams have had to find a way to close the gap on City.

LPool fans will remember last season’s team because it’s the team Klopp built and Arteta’s Arsenal will be remembered (if they win the title) because it’ll be the first title in over 20 years.
