Just out of interest do goalkeepers not get injured. Is Donna summers going to go all season without an injury. 🤔
Trafford, He is a good back up and will Continue to learn his trade alongside the worlds best. 👍
The odd one gets a shoulder injury but otherwise, not really.

Trafford is a 1st team keeper, he was at Burnley, pretty sure he would have been at Newcastle. Being the no 2 will stifle him. Great for City to have him as a back up but for him, this has been a bad window, imo

Even for a City fan this a rose-tinted view. He's not some young kid, he's 22 years old and if he's going to improve considerably he needs to be playing week in week out - not watching somebody else play. He's not going to get the number 1 jersey from Pickford for his great performances against the likes of Huddersfield in the League Cup.

One thing re the City roundabout of keepers that has not been mentioned. Ederson was close to going at the beginning of last season. He had one year left on his Contract. So City sold him and the best of luck to him. But how many times has it been said on here. “
The club is to blame in allowing him to run his contract down. Eddie, City, fans are happy. Who is to say Trafford is not.

Do you mean before Trafford signed or after? It seemed like Ederson leaving was an uncertainty right up until yesterday?

At any rate, it seemed like some were saying that Ederson would be expected to leave in the not too distant future, at which point Trafford would get his big chance at one of the top clubs in Europe. That seemed to be the ultimate optimistic scenario, and ignoring what could be the alternative.

Now that City have signed one of the most high profile goalkeepers in the world, aged only 26, good luck for Trafford in getting his "plenty" of games. I'm sure he'll be made up playing in the League Cup matches, and perhaps some other cup games every now and then.

Personally, I think it would have been better for his own development and standing in the game to be the first choice keeper for a decent club, playing all the league games and perhaps many of their cup games as well. At City, it looks like the only way that is going to happen now is if Donnarumma gets a long-term injury, or after 6 months it appears Donnarumma is bad enough to get dropped.
City’s reserve keeper had 22 appearances in 24/25 yes Ederson was injured but that happens in football. City have 2 quality keepers now . Happy days

Trafford has had 160 first team games so far

I suspect he went to City thinking he would challenge Ederson who hasn’t been at his best but I guess he didn’t think they would sign Donnarumma so he will now spend most of the time warming the bench

A move to Newcastle would have been better for his career - the move to City prob better for his wallet

No one said it wasn't great for City. Just pants for Trafford's career. He's at peak development age, needs to be playing every game. I think after two years he'll probably realise that and move on, but it might be too late.

I've absolutely no doubt, for a City fan, that it is great news to have great goalkeepers on the bench as well as on the pitch. It would also be amazing if City had Haaland as their main striker and Kane as their back up (or vice versa).

I'm simply saying that, for the player that ends up being the back up, it isn't necessarily going to be the best option for them. Especially if the main guy doesn't get injured.

Trafford may well end up breaking through somehow, and having a great career. But, I also think back to relatively young players who go to big clubs, and it virtually ends their careers, as they end up sitting on the bench and largely getting forgotten. Must be even harder for a keeper, because you can only have one keeper on the pitch at a time, they don't typically get rotated as much, nor come off the bench for tactical reasons.

I suspect City have looked at it more as a good business transaction, rather than signing a player they are eager to improve their first team. If he does become their No. 1, it'll be a bonus to them. But, at 22, I reckon they think they were able to get him at a relatively decent price (£27 million), good cover on the bench if needed, and in 2 or 3 years they can still probably offload him and command a decent fee for him.

Not sure Trafford will get as many games as you think. He’ll play for as long as City are in the Carabao and FA Cups. Can’t see him playing too many league or CL games.

Stuart Pearce reportedly (I don’t listen) said on TalkSport yesterday that Trafford should use this as an opportunity to learn from one of the best. That ignores the fact that Donnarumma is only 26 and could potentially be at the club for another ten years. Is that all James Trafford is worth?

As regards Donnarumma himself, he’s a fabulous shot stopper, but there’s a huge question mark hanging over him for me. He is notoriously weak under high balls. We’ve all seen allegedly top class keepers come into the Premier League and really struggle because of the way the game is played here.

So the jury is out until he’s played in the intensity of this league.
Judging from Traffords performance against Brighton on Sunday I think he ought to be no.1 at City.
He made some crucial saves and looked very secure and accomplished on more than a few occasions.
So why wasn't Ederson playing?

How comes Trafford is at peak age yet the Utd keeper is still developing 🤔

Risk of injury when being sold. 👍

Which keeper are you talking about? I assume you mean Lammens? And given it is likely he has been brought in with the intention of becoming Utd No.1 pretty rapidly / instantly, then it is going to be a pretty good chance for him to develop (albeit under an intense microscope, which might make or break him depending on his character).

That's very different to Trafford. It seemed like he was coming in to become a back up to Ederson. And even if there was talk of Ederson leaving and Trafford replacing him, that has been blown out of the water by signing Donnarumma.

You could only compare the situation to Utd if Man Utd bought Lammens a few weeks ago (with the belief that he would quickly become No. 1), and then they go and sign Martinez on deadline day. Even then, it is still more extreme for City, because Donnarumma is only 26, so could technically be City's No. 1 for at least the next decade, if he is any good.

Oh come on, Tash!

Do you really want to justify it by suggesting James Trafford, a young keeper with international ambitions, is there to plug the gap when your first choice is injured? Like Kelleher when he was at Liverpool, Trafford should be playing first team football, not waiting for the occasional opportunity.

I don't know how genuine this is, but if it is, wow. United certainly have a type. 😂

Thing is it's easy to make a compilation video to make a keeper look world class or Sunday league depending on the angle you have. I don't take anything from these videos (either positive or negative) for that very reason, until he's actually in net you can't judge.

I can almost guarantee that when City were discussing the transfer with Trafford it was on the basis that Ederson was going and he would be the new starting keeper which was communicated to him. I don't think for a second he moves to City if he knows that Donnarumma is also moving as it's a downwards move for him, he's going from a starting PL keeper to sitting on a bench. I'd imagine he's really unimpressed right now and wishing he could wind the clock back a few weeks.

It is going to be very difficult for any keeper to displace Pickford at England for the next few years, given how established and experienced he has become. He is 31 now, so probably a few years in him yet.

But, I'm guessing if any goalkeeper has a chance to displace him, it would be Trafford? Or at least become his ready made successor in 2 or 3 years, when Trafford is in his mid 20's and Pickford winding down international football. However, if Trafford finds himself on the bench for most of the next 2 or 3 seasons, that could massively harm his international future. Especially if another young English keeper bursts onto the scene in the next year or two.

Whereas had Trafford gone to a club like Newcastle (still a top club in the PL), and was pretty much guaranteed to be their main man, it could have been a fantastic opportunity for him. I suspect Eddie Howe would show good faith in him as well. And, as a potential bonus, if Eddie Howe actually becomes England manager down the line, it would have been nice to know the England manager knows you very very well from club level

It is interesting that Grimsby have been fined for fielding an ineligible player in their win against Man Utd in the League Cup.

Now, Man Utd deserved to get eliminated as they were awful, and a fine is consistent to what has happened to teams doing the same thing in the League Cup before.

However, I just found it interesting that the EFL operates to a different set of rules to the FA. Had the same offence happened in the FA Cup, Grimsby would likely have been eliminated.
