ETH started it. But, as it isn't amateur football, he couldn't just get rid of bad apples at will. Very tricky process when you have several bad apples, all on big contracts with a long time remaining.Ten Hag dipped his toe in the water but didn’t really get to grips with players whose attitudes stank the place out providing they could put a performance in once in a while.
Rashford was a classic case in point. Occasionally consigned to the naughty step for a day or so before being brought back, but exhibiting absolutely no change in his attitude. Amorim hasn’t stood for it. And it seems he isn’t standing for it with Garnacho.
He was never going to win with Rashford. Rashford was the huge positive in his first season, so it is no surprise he got a nice new contract (albeit too high a salary). The next season, Rashford stunk the place out. But, there were really no other top attacking players who could come in and score the goals, and challenge Rashford. It is almost damned if you do, damned if you don't. Drop him, you have no idea where else the goals could come from and are blamed for keeping him out. Play him, and you are blamed for not being tougher on him (if he continues not to score). So, given his issues with the squad, I can see why he kept playing him. Hoping he'd play himself into some sort of form and confidence.
When Amorim came in, it was easy for him to start with a clean slate (like ETH did when he first came in, and dealt with players like Ronaldo). It would be difficult for Amorim to start dealing with players next season, if they were decent for him last season (although, to be fair, there are not many to choose from), and start stinking the place out next season. He will be helped though, if the club finally get their act together in the transfer window, and bring in some quality players who can put in good performances, and cover for the players who stink the place out. It makes it easier for Amorim to drop big time players, if there are others in the side that can get the job done.
