After a few pretty average performances early on plus a bit of luck the ladies are hitting form in the World Cup at the right time so hopefully can go all the way on Sunday. Pretty much the exact opposite to how the men's team fair in tournament football.
Is Harry Maguire the new Gareth Bale, fighting for his place but never looking like he’ll get in? Good on him for the self-belief but is he chasing the impossible?
He needs to go, Brian. Fighting for his place is one thing but, given where he is in the pecking order, surely he needs to show ambition to be playing regularly by biting the bullet and moving on.
If that means him being only filthy rich instead of stinking filthy rich then so be it. I’m sure he’ll cope.

I agree. Some play for the love of the game and personal progression so would have jumped at the chance of a move, others play as they get paid a shed load of money and it's the club trying to ship them out so they feel that they should be paid to leave. If Maguire is the latter then I don't think anyone can whinge about it, he signed a contract and is due some sort of payment. The only thing I was surprised about with Maguire isn't so much his United position but his England one. Southgate was obviously happy to ignore his United problems and keep picking him for England however if he's going to be a benchwarmer there's no way he can retain his international place. I would have thought that'd be a fairly big consideration to someone like Maguire.

They gave him the contract
Players sign contracts not just because they want to have lots of games of football. It is their profession. They sign them to get paid as well as they can, and can guarantee a secure income for as many years as possible. Otherwise they'd just happily play for about £40,000 - £50,000 a week, live a comfortable life and play football. If they get dropped, just move to another club that has no issue with paying those types of numbers.
Harry Maguire is 30 now. Even if he went to West Ham, still no guarantee he'll keep getting picked for England if another young CB bursts onto the scene, although it does probably increase his odds.
And, maybe he does have ambition. It is unlikely he'll get a transfer to another of the biggest clubs in the world, so staying at Man Utd may be is only opportunity at playing for a top club, who can potentially compete for the top prizes. He may be hoping that, if Utd sort out their attacking play, and most importantly their possession play, then things will suddenly get a whole lot easier for the defence. And, if he can edge his way back into the team, whether it be because of injuries or just better play by him, then maybe he thinks he can push for a starting position again?
In that respect, I don't blame Maguire. If anyone is to blame, it is Man Utd for giving him that contract in the first place I suppose.
It'll be interesting to see what position Chelsea are in in a few years, with all these long contracts. What if some of these players end up being useless, how easy will it be to offload them??? At least to clubs outside of Saudi Arabia. I see Lukaku is on £325,000 a week, and his contract is until 2026. Would this be why he is still at Chelsea, and they haven't managed to offload him?

So Maguire is apparently on £190k pw,at West Ham it would be £120k.

Isn’t this a consequence of stupid contracts in football now.
He can sit there and get his money every month.
Dosnt leave until his contract ends , makes him rich but not playing so out of the critics eyes.!
Must come a time if he’s not playing that GS leaves him out of the England squad.

Thing is that is £7mil over 2 years which is a fortune to most but not much to a football club the size of united. Surely there was a deal to be done where they paid off some or all of that to clear the wage bill, bring in some money and allow for further signings. I suspect that him staying may prevent a further signing this summer.
