The 'Fist Pump'

I've already explained what circumstances i find fist pumping offensive and which I dont.

Why would you want to go raging around waving your fist in the air? Do you want a fight or something? Cant you find another non-aggressive way to display your feelings? If its man against man a fist pump to me means your wanting some aggro and have stepped over the etiquette line. If youve holed your chip from off the green for a half I will say good shot mate , I dont need you to wave your fist in my face with a big snarl on your lips like youve just won the Ryder Cup

cant say that i understand where your coming from.

theres a massive difference between a fist pump and a waving a fist in someones face and snarling, which i can honestly and thankfully say ive never seen on the golf course.

if its forced or planned it probably looks stupid, the same as football celebrations. if you hole a good putt, ones wrong with enjoying it, provided its not being done to antagonise your opponent

FFS what's wrong with showing some emotion. How many of you have had an eagle?
When you do, what are you going to do?
Just casually pick the ball out of the hole, kiss the ball, look embarrassed, none of the above?

I have no problem with an oppo fist pumping, I may well have done it myself, TBH I couldn't tell you.

If I have an albatross i have already rehearsed my celebration. Bend pin and sing we are the champions into the flag. a la Freddie Mercury :D

you don't just stand there do ya if you have a birdie or an eagle you do a fist pump who cares what other people think ?!?! its a game !

Hahahaaha, this post is great. Please let this get put in the mag

I think you've taken it the wrong way!
I have "fist pumped" before after canning a fantastic, hole winning putt when I had no right to.
I fist pumped as the ball dropped, and my gesture was aimed at the hole as the ball disappeared into it, not at my opponent.
To be honest, at that precise moment in time, my opponent was the very, very last thing on my mind, or in my field of view.
It was that little bloody white thing finally being put to rest.
;)

I'm afraid I'm a regular pumper. Its not something I've tried copying from thr pros but is just a natural reaction in a clutch situation. I think its actually quite a good thing especially in matchplay as it shows the opponent you are actually grinding away. I was two down with three to go on Saturday int he summer knockout. Having got back to all square playing 18 I had a simple 12 foot two putt for a half. Whether it was nerves, trying too hard for the win or just a brain failure I'm suddenly looking at 8 foot coming back the other way to stay alive. I drained it and gave a little pump. Didn't mean too it just came out. I eventually won on the 20th

Playing the medal yesterday nothing much was happening and had gone out in +1 over my handicap. A great up and down at 12 got my interest back and the thought that I could still get close to my handicap. A great save at 14 and a pump and suddnely my competitive juices were flowing.

I think it can be a good thing as a motivational tool to. I'm not advocating huge Tiger pumps every time you hole out from a foot, but if you make a decent putt under pressure or get a birdie, I think its good to get some tension out. Its a game that requires a fusion of concentration (over a long period of time) and technique and so you don't have the ability to express feelings in more active sports (football, rugby etc)

The pump is here to stay in my game at least.

Only when long putts or a nice approach hot just trickles in for eagle then i see no problem, Though fist pumping for a d.bogey noooooooooooo :o

I'm doing this right across the green:

In all seriousness, I think jammy has taken it out of context, at least i hope he has, otherwise remind me never to play a round with him....the showing of emotions is strictly forbidden!

Absoulutly nothing against you jammy, and not looking to cause a fight or arguement but based on what you said above, I dont think I would ever want to play a round with someone who shares you views on this subject.

Couple of reasons spring to mind.

A) Sore loser
B) Misserable sod

I have witnessed quite a few decent shots in my time and have been known to share in the celebration of my oppos.
I would expect nothing less than a High 5 from Vig if one of us made a chip in or alike when playing pairs!!!

As a junior, there were a pair of members who thought they were the big I ams at my old club. They were a good pairing but made sure everyone knew it. I was off about 6 and my mate was off about 9 and we took them on one Saturday afternoon and I think it was when I kept humming another one bites the dust every time one of us holed a putt for another win that ground them down along with the fist pumps, the Woosie point (a la the Masters) and the odd Seve Open dance. Mind you we did them 8&6 and went round level gross and my partner was +2

I have to say that was the only time it did get a bit out of hand (but seemed fun at the time - not big and not clever in hindsight)

:D :D :D

In that case I think I may have taken it out of context , maybe the 'fistpump' should be clarified. Is it a little girly one a la Henman or a big manly one a la Tiger and his multi piston pump :D

I have NO probs with the fist pump if youre playing medals and probs wouldnt get too upset if it was a litlle personal pump in m/p , I just dont want to see a big up and down several times and get in there my son you da man when your my opponent in m/p.

And no im not slightest bit a sore loser or miserable , in fact I try to make the effort to be exactly the opposite. It was just my opinion on one part of the pump debate and several of you have not clearly read my whole posts , no probs I'll just come round and give you some counselling :D

Anyone remember the move on Tiger Woods 07 when a player drops a long putt he puts his left hand on his left hip and slides the putter in like a gun in a holster and walk off the green strutting lol I must admit to doing that ;) once or twice but only when no one is around.
