After Shane Lowry's fist pump at the weekend (allowed all things considered), we are asking when is it acceptable to give it a little fist pump at local club level?

Are we talking about when you've just won a matchplay game, in which case I'd say no because you'll look like a bit of a Henmanesque tool.

Or, when you've just holed a putt for a change, because in that case I'd say yes it's fine if done slightly ironically.

Absolutely.
I played in a foursomes match against the captain and secretary of Piltdown at Crowborough once. Really tight game and we were odds on to go one down on the par 5 14th because the knob I was playing with had oinked one into the trees. I played three off the tee, knobby boy hit the second about 20 yards short of the green and I canned the putt for par (eagle with the second ball). They were on in three and three jerked it. How my fist pumped!! We ended up winning 3&2 whoohoo!!
:D :D :D :D

I only call my playing partner a knob because he had played like one all the way round, not just that hole... :o :o

All fist pumps of any kind be it a friendly round or your club's biggest comp. In short, are fist pumps acceptable at amateur level? By way of a comparison, last season when playing football in a Sunday league Div 2 game (pub football) a former pro scored against us (no names mentioned but he did play for Spurs). We were down by at least five. This chap has played at Wembley, and after the floating the ball over our flimsy wall into the top corner beating our 72-year-old keeper who was rooted to the spot, he still felt the need to give it a clenched fist. Unacceptable. Totally unacceptable. Can we draw comparisons on the golf course? Stories please.

Usually when I drive it past the ladies tee.
:D :D :D

When i'm playing by myself i "fist pump" regularly, as a sort of congratulations to myself. Usually after i've made a clutch putt for par/bogie to keep my score ticking over.

If i'm playing with a partner then not so often, but I do do it, it just takes something a bit more special to do it then.

only once and last week. Not only the fist pump but also walking after the ball.

It was a par putt, 12-15foot I would think. Perfect line and going to the hole at a decent pace then it stopped. Just stopped on the lip.

My playing partners enjoyed my show of emotion... :o

On holiday in Turkey last year with the brother-in-law and we were finishing up the 4th round of the week with me going double or quits for 100 euros. He's kicked my proverbial for the rest of the week and played some great golf.

After 9, I was 3 down, but rattled off 5 straight wins to get 2 up with 3 to play. On the 16th, he went in the water...I went down the middle, nailed a birdie from 15 ft and then produced a moonwalk into a swallow-dive, followed by the worm....a fist pump just would not have rubbed it in enough!

A moonwalk  just imagine what that could do to the greens :p

You'd end up with Paul Lawrie after you :D

it's okay, I never could moonwalk properly, so i was more of a normal walk in reverse....looked appalling - more chance of Michael Jackson fans beating me up for such poor execution!

If a fist pump wants to come out then let it, if you try to force these things it looks strange, and I don't think its good to stiffle a fist pump either I am no Doctor but I am sure its bad for you.

I read that Tiger does that little club twirl after good shots as a kind of mental marker, it helps him remember them and the feelings that go with them. It must be similar with a fist pump.

I have only done it once on the course to my memory. Whilst making my first eagle. I had driven the ball about 275 down the fairway, hit an approach about 190 yards with my hybrid and had about a 6ft putt for Eagle. My legs were trembling over the putt but I made it, and a 'get in there' type fist pump seemed to naturally follow. :D

Hmmmmmm which pro's can get away with it?

Tiger's usually looks ok, especially as he has an enormous backdrop of thousands in the gallery who all roar as it happens. I quite like the little walk after a tricky putt and a little finger point at the hole as it drops.....nice!

I feel uncomfortable watching Nicolas Fasth doing a fist pump, it looks so fake and pre-planned....ugh!
