The 'Fist Pump'

I must admit to the greater golfing nation that last weekend after a poor 48 on the first 9 I chipped in on the 10th from 30 yards to make my first eagle in 2009 and to be honest I wasn’t sure what to do, my legs felt like running around like a headless chicken, my mind wanted to weep a tear of joy, my body wanted to moondance and my arms wanted to throw my club in the air in victory, in the end I just jumped up and down whilst checking no one was on the first tee and ended up looking like a plonka in front of the wife, something never change.

On the same round my wife who is a total and I mean total beginner dropped a 20 foot putt and I did notice she fist pumped… No idea where she gets it from!!

Think yourself lucky you need to, one day you'll not feel the urge to fist pump and your 'game' will decline! :(

you guys never cease to make me laugh!!! although i must add that its much better when the gf does the fist pumping for you - then you dont need to look like a plonker :o ;) :p
 
Lets not forget why we ALL play this game, enjoyment! If you can't show your enjoyment at canning a birdie foot from 15ft or beating your oppo's 2&1 in the clubs matchplay then what is the point in playing?

I have never been a first pumper, i dont really celebrate playing golf but I certainly wouldn't take any offence if someone I was playing against did it. Would rather play with a smile on my face than shout silently inside for fear of offending someone!
 
If I was playing against someone in matchplay (be it singles or doubles) I would find a fist pump from them to be very rude and a case of bad manners and disrespectful tbh , I would have a quiet word to ask them why the match was so important that they felt inclined to make the offensive gesture

On the flip side I wouldnt have a prob if someone did it during a medal or stableford if theyd just chipped in or holed a monster for par etc..after all we've got to show soome emotion in those situations when we're playing for our own cards
 
I remember when I was a lad my mum caught me fist pumping in the bath one day.
She had a right go at me, but I told her in no uncertain terms that it was mine, and I'd wash it as fast as I liked.

I found myself fist pumping recently when I chipped in for a par in our club's 4BBB matchplay comp. We were 2 down looking like 3 when it happened and we won the hole and didn't lose another eventually winning 5&4.

I saw the oppurtunity, there was no danger, so I took it!

And Lo, it was good! :D
 
tbh if I am in a match I usually comment on my other peoples good shots and if they dropped a good shot shake their hands and feed of the excitement of the moment. I see no wrong in someone fist pumping, just as long as they wash their hands after ;)
 
I will admit to doing this last year, the one and only time I have done it though!!

My playing partner and I were in the semi final of the mens better ball and stood on 15, were starring defeat in the face at 3 down. My playing partner hit a streak and won the next 3 holes, 2 under gross and we were tied down the last. My playing partner went OB off the tee and I finally managed to get one out the middle, approach on and had a 10ft putt to win it, needless to say, it dropped and the sense of achievement with the comeback took over. Luckily, we were playing friends of ours.

We lost the final on the 1st playoff hole though :(

I think my only problem with them is so often they seem forced, like when Tim Henman used to do them.

They are possibly scared by emotions - punch the air next time you make a big putt it feels great, you have to enjoy them when they go in.

They view it as unsportsman like and it's just not British is it!

I say let go of your repressed emotions you'll be amazed how good it makes you feel.....try a high five with your opponent.....he'll love it he will, he'll love it! ;)
