Hello all, though a regular reader of the magazine this is my first attempt at a post..
I have been a member at my local club now for 2 years and am struggling to get three cards signed to obtain an official handicap, unofficially I am playing off 18. Not being from round these parts originally(devon)I dont know that many people. I asked at the starters hut if they had a list of members who would be willing to take me round with them to sign my cards but all they could offer was a round with the pro at eighty pounds for a certificate of competence!. can anyone suggest how I can find members willing to go out to sign my cards?, or should I continue plodding round on my lonesome and hope to join up with someone by chance?

Hi mate and welcome,

I had a similar problem due to shifts that I worked, I spoke to the people who booked the tee times and they just added me to other members groups so that I could get my cards signed by them, also speak to the person who is in charge of your membership, if you explain the problem they may arrange to go out with you so that they can sign your cards. Hope this helps and good luck.

Notice in the locker romm or on the notice board may well help. Surely there's someone who can help? If not is that the right club to be a member of?

Ask the secretary if there are any 'roll ups' ( where people turn up and mix in for a game ) at the club. He/she is very likely to know what goes on. If you show up at one of these, they will help you. That's what I did when I first joined a club, that helped me to get to know a few fellow members. I know of about 5 roll up times at the club now , so can always get a game.

Good luck.

When I first joined my club and had to put in 3 cards, I asked the pro to put me with some single players. He did this twice, the third outing was with a regular rollup so I turned up at 8am Monday morning thinking there might be half a dozen people. When I got to the first tee I thought it was sale day at next. There must have been thirty people there. Ball in a hat 4 at a time. Got stung for a fiver by two old bandits. :D

Best of luck, dyorkie
surely the pro or a committee memeber will suggest something. Most clubs are keen to have members involved.
If you ask for help and none is forthcoming, maybe reconsider yur membership?

I'm sorry to hear this. It can be very difficult to get in on games for card marking. I have always asked the pro for his advice, likely times to tag on or, as mentioned, turn-up and play games. In reality, at the 3 clubs have joined, the pro has tended to introduce me to another player who doesn't have a regular 2/3/4 ball. I think at 2 clubs, he (the pro) has more or less asked in such a way that it would seem unreasonable to say no. There will always be a few, but in my experience, sooner or later there will be someone ready to do the decent thing.
Turning up for serious games (medals/s-fords) is often the least effective, but a roll-up or mid-week is good hunting ground. Good luck.

PS....the comment about going round with the pro (for £80) is just about the most stupid thing I've heard. A good club will care about helping it's members in these sort of issues.
I wonder what sort of club you are a member of, things don't quite add up i.m.o.

I concur with everything that has been said re notice in the locker room and getting the pro/secretary to fix a game up for you. Have you thought about using one of the club medals as a way of doing it. Enter it and get drawn to play in a group and get them to fill the card in that way

the handicap secretary should be able to help, the starter is often not involved in anything else. failing that just turn up and talk to players waiting to go out. the chances are that there will be those willing to help.

I agree with Homer in regard to putting your name down for a medal. That's what I did and had my card marked for handicap purposes whilst also meeting new people.
