And it's not even that close :(

Par 3 17th at Belton Park. Playing about 175 yards, I take out a 4 iron to try and "bleed it in" and get it close (the pin was protected by a bunker and tree infront of the green)...Instead I thin one, starting out about 20 yards left of the target line, fading (slicing) back in towards the short cut infront of the green.

From the tee, it looked like it went straight over the hole.

Got down to the green to find this:

Mine is the one at the bottom of the picture. The marker and ball at the top were one of my opponent's (the marker, who had that for 3 nett 1) and my playing partner's 2nd respectively.

I sunk the 3ft'er that secured my only birdie of the day and us the match which was pleasing (despite how it got there! )

But I'm fairly sure I won't get closer than that for a long, long time, if ever.

It's a sickener isnt it when you get so close but just miss out!

Was playing the 5th at Rudding Park last year, hit a lovely shot over the bunker at the front, straight at the flag. It looked great all the way but couldnt see it finish cos of the bunker. Walked up to the green only to find it 2" right behind the hole...... how it got right behind without dropping I dont know :D :D

....... I take out a 4 iron to try and "bleed it in" and get it close .......

Is that a Johnny Miller quote?? Too much TV Aztecs!!! :D

Ha...It was the phrase of the day on saturday...I hope it's not a Johnny Miller quote, I don't think I could ever forgive myself!

Thats a Johnny Miller quote mate got fed up hearing it,good shot by the way

Well, that's just ruined my day! :( ;)

Cheers BTW.

what does it mean? :D My 16 handicap means I try to hit it straight and hope it makes it!

To those people who are good at golf it means they would fade one in with control.

For the rest of us it means "I want to try and hit a fade, but it probably won't work out how I want it to, so we'll just hit it and see how it goes".

I kinda had similar outcome playing yesterday, playing a par 3 of a temp tee so it was only playing about 90 yards. Caught my tee shot thin which caused it to clatter into the branches of a tree at the front left of the green and then fly out 20 yards right and hit the pin!

But it ended up hurtling off the green :(

Would you have been happy if it had gone in though, knowing it was a bad shot?

I had a similar experience where i hit a lovely fading shot into a par 3 and it hit the pin and bounced off....then my mate stepped up, shanked one and it bouced in all directions down to the green and once it started rolling on the green looked like it was only ever going to end up in one place...in the hole...and it did!! I kinda feld exctaticfor him but also gutted for myself as i had hit by far the better shot!

We were playing in this tournament at the time

I had one that close on the second at wike ridge (Leeds golf centre) it was a bit foggy and couldn't see the flag. Hit a 6 iron that felt good but could hardly see the green so didn't know where it had landed. When we got to the green all 4 of us had peppered the pin. I was closest at about 2 foot to the right. My first and only birdie in golf so far.

Now I never even seem to find the green!

Sounds very similar to the closest i've ever come.

Sclaffed a 4 iron at the braids, scuttled along the ground, up and over the mound at the front of the green. My foursomes partner up at the green hd his head in his hands, stopped a baw hair short of the hole!

Would still have taken the hole in one though!!!

Glad you holed the putt for birdie though.
