The all things EV chat thread

Hang on a sec. A typical EV does about 3.5 miles/kWh, so 80p per kWh works out at about 22p/mile.
What modern ICE car costs that much for fuel? A Ferrari, perhaps?

I've said it before: an EV only makes economic sense if you can charge at home for the overwhelming majority of your mileage.
I comfortably get 4.5+ miles/KWh in my Nero EV, not sure where you get 3.5from as typical, a Taycan perhaps🤣

Ouch. Is that the petrol / diesel equivalent of using a service station to fill up at? I worked out that my car, 2.0d Merc B, would have used £75 of fuel for that trip based on filling up at a normal fuel station.

Are the fast chargers always that expensive?
If you user public fast chargers then yes.. it works out more expensive than ICE vehicles. The GRIDSERVE chargers were 89p/Kwh or if you use their app then 79p. They are not octopus. I needed high speed because I did not want to wait for a long time. It is like using premium fuel.
The hotel used Project EV chargers and were on octopus, so I got 8% off.

My prev Volvo would do that distance in about <80 quid.

To @jim8flog point.. we have home charger and so we can afford it. We also have solar, so we maybe getting some money on outgoing fare. So EVs are best if you can do home charging + average <80 miles per day (so you can top up at night)

TBF you could get a Tesla membership and pay less than 30p per kwh. Without it's around 50p.

Many providers offer membership which can reduce rates significantly. Fees are usually circa 5 to £10 a month then reduced usage rates.
Never going to be as cheap as home charging , but less than ice if you use the figure that 50p per kwh is roughly the same same 1 ltr of diesel performance wise.

My problem the night before was having switched to Octopus Intelligent Go it was not working the same way as OVO and had not fully charged my car by 9 am and sadly we had a planned powered outage then so I could not top it up.

Still need to figure it out because it like it happened again last night but have not checked the car yet.

I knew they had chargers where I intended to have a planned break ( Stourhead) so did not bother to check the app before hand to see if cheaper ones were elsewhere on my journey, just needed a boost charge to get me home.

I haven’t paid that much for petrol for the car or diesel for the van in absolute ages.
But then if you’re going to use motorway services prices as an example, why not stick to the likewise EV charging costs?
Tbf that was my local Tesco cost at one point.

Can’t ever remember prices that high around here - was it during the fuel shortage ?
I have no idea. It looks like a motorway service station sign.
I can't remember ever paying that much for diesel, even during the fuel shortage, but its easy to use something like that as the defacto prices.
As I said before, why not use the away from home prices as the defacto EV charging costs.

They have already been mentioned above

I was just showing that both fuels are expensive at motorway services.

The other point, when you refill at these places, you pay their set price for diesel and petrol....take it or leave it.
With EV charging, you can choose how much you pay, depending on how fast you want to charge... 49pkw if you just want a top up

Plenty of ways to get it even cheaper, if you charge on the road a lot then a subscription will save £££ ionity is 43p a kWh with membership
