Sandy Lyle is no doubt a lovely bloke, but what on earth is he doing saying these things? Did he honestly think he had a chance of getting the Ryder Cup captaincy? If he did, then that has gone.

There is as much chance of Lyle being named captain in a future Ryder Cup as there is of Young Tom Morris.

So has any possibility of being named a vice-captain to Montgomerie at Celtic Manor next year, which Montgomerie said was a possibility last week at Loch Lomond.I wouldn't be suprised if Lyle now pulls out of Thursday....shame as he was a terrific golfer but is rapidly starting to look a bitter and twisted tit.

Yeah, a real shame. I do think it a bit poor of the R&A to have overlooked the 2-time major winner, but I doubt pulling out of the Open last year after 9 holes has helped his cause. But to then accuse Monty of cheating after they already cleared him wreaks of sour grapes....at 51 he at least 40 years too old for all that.

I am afraid that Lyle will become a victim of a very modern crime, telling the truth.

Not withstanding Montgomeries disgraceful behaviour on the course he is also a blatant cheat. He was caught out on camera in Indonesia and only escaped because of the old boys network.

That he is our Ryder Cup captain brings shame to this country and Europe.

Well done Sandy, the truth is often uncomfortable but it remains the truth.

Sandy Lyle will not be a Ryder Cup captain. I think there are too many problems with his nomination now for it to receive the unanimous votes needed by the Ryder Cup committee. Its a shame as I've met the bloke a few times and he's always a perfectly friendly guy who'll stop and have a chat and was a great stalwart of European Golf.

Personally I'd love to see him come good on the seniors tour and roll back the years and win a big event (British Seniors Open???)

So what about Sandy's cheating in Kenya (changing the characteristics of a club) and his falling out with Faldo, because Faldo brought it to the attention of the officials (as every golfer should be duty bound to do).

His walking off after 9 holes at the Open and his whinging about not being made captain, totally justifies the decision not to make captain.

I think that by speaking as he did, he has justified the committee's decision to bypass him for the captaincy.
Better to be quiet and be thought a fool than to speak out and confirm it and all that.

Did he cheat, or just make a mistake?
The difference here was that Faldo never mentioned it at all to Lyle, which was shady and he waited 7 holes to speak to an official.
What would have been the most sporting course of action was to speak to Lyle about it and then let Lyle notify an official.

Lyle didnt cheat in Kenya, he placed tape on his putter to cut down the glare. Faldo being the prick he is instead of speaking to Lyle reported it and had him DQ'd.

Monty blatantly improved his lie in full view of TV cameras. That and his infamous "your here because of me, remember that" rant at the Sky cameraman should have automatically barred him from ever being a Ryder Cup captain.

Your welcome

Sandy should never a serious candidate for RC Captain, and he has nicely shown part of the reason why. Whether Monty cheated or not is not the point, Sandy comes across like a schoolkid who had his toy taken away by his parents.

I think Sandy Lyle torpedoed his chances of RC Captain when he stormed off of the course after 8 holes at last years Open. I believe he was 4 or 5 over after 8, blaming rain spots on his glasses, then it turned into a hand injury......in my opinion he should have seen the round out then withdrawn.

Some poor sod (first reserve) would have travelled to the course, gone through all his preperations just the same as anyone else and been on standby, only to watch someone throw a hissy fit after 8 holes and waste a playing oppourtunity.

As much as i dislike Monty i have to agree that Lyles behaviour at the Open was also out of order.

They are both Pricks

Lyle broke the rules in Kenya, it's up to you whether you call that cheating.
It makes no difference who Faldo told, Lyle had broke the rules. Why does Lyle think it would have made any difference if Faldo had told him? Perhaps he would have removed the plaster without admitting his infringement of the rules.
Whereas Monty was cleared of any wrong doing.

If anything goes wrong Lyle is always looking to blame something/someone else and never takes responsibilty himself. Hardly an attribute to make him a good captain.

His achievements in golf can not be denied, but his other qualities make him totally unsuitable for Ryder Cup captain.

The right decision was made in not appointing Lyle, but whether or not Monty was a good choice is a matter for conjecture.

Lyle was ridiculous and petty to say what he did publically. I too lost respect for him walking in at The Open - he was not injured, he was just frustrated.

Monty has always been a clown in my book, he is aloof and arrogant and loves himself too much.

Let's face it neither of them are going to feature in the Open anyway. Ryder Cup is over a year away so is not relevant to this week at Turnberry anyway. Offer a player the choice of Open Champion or RC winner - not a hard decision is it?

Lyle is jealous and bitter, Monty is a pratt and just wants to be in the spotlight all the time by trumpeting his role as RC captain.

Wish they'd both just go away. Their playground spat will be forgotten as soon as Broadhurst knocks that 1st tee shot away on Thursday.

Being relatively new to the game, i didn't know of the Montgomerie situation... for anyone else in the same boat, there's a good article here

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/golf/article528968.ece

sounds like Lyle has tried to shift attention away from himself rather than just explain truthfully about walking off last year.

here was me thinking golf was a game of honour and integrity!
