Heard a lot of people sounding off about the golf superstores and the poor service they receive when it comes to selecting clubs. So I thought I should sing the praises of one of the most pleasurable experiences I have had in a golf shop.

Well I would like to give Peterborough American Golf at Thorpe Wood a big thumbs up. The lad I saw really knew what he was doing and managed to get a big order out of me because of this. Anyone looking for a new set of clubs should give them a go as it is on a driving range with a computerised bay they use to custom fit on. They have the full fitting system for Mizuno, PING and Cobra. ALso they do not alter the flight scope kit to make you think you are hitting the ball further as I hit my 6i and it was travelling exactly the distance I expect it to.

For those not interested in my stats and what I bought may want to stop reading at this point.

It all started with 3 swings on the Mizuno DNA to have a look at what was happening. For those that this will mean anything to, this is what it was:

Head Speed 94
Tempo 5
Toe Down 4
Kick angle 4
Release Factor 4

So from this we took my wrist to floor measurement and made up a JPX 825 Pro from the fitting cart set 2 degree upright, 1 inch long with a TT DG x100 and started hitting balls. Well first swing was 196 from a 6i . Hit a total of 5 shots and averaged 193 yards. Being slightly sceptical I grabbed my 6i from my bag and hit 5 with that and averaged 177 yards. So I now knew that the flight scope was set up correctly.

Now I tried the other options that the DNA gave for me, the Project X 6.0 and the KBS Tour X-Stiff. Both did not perform anywhere near as good as the TT DG X100.

Comparing the feedback on the screen of the 3 different shafts in the JPX compared to my 6i was unbelievable. Out of the 3 shafts the X100 was going further by about 8 yards on a lower trajectory but with a higher spin rate. Compared with my 6i it was lower, longer by about 15 yards with about 1000 extra RPM.......

Oh well enough of all that this is what will be in my bag very shortly, all will come fitted with Multicompound White-out grips.

18* & 21* MP-H4 TTDG X-100
4-PW JPX 825 Pro X-100
50* & 58* MP-T4 wedges

Hurry up Mizuno and make my new shineys up please.

Good post Adey.

I hit the MP64 a few months ago when I got my MP52 regripped and they were also going silly distances on the monitor I used. Did you have a swipe with them or did you go straight for the JPX825 pro.

You are now officially the anti-christ, daring to praise AG! Have never received anything but great service from my local one. Clearly at some stores they hold a gun to your head. Great review Adey.

Looking at the lofts for your new and old 6 iron is a difference of 3 degrees so your new 6 is more like a 5 in your old set

I know that, when the Mizuno fitting software suggested my set up it shows the lofts and I saw it then. The JPX 6i is 1* weaker than my 5i, so for it to be out hitting my 5i is some serious engineering. It explains why you do not get a 3i in this set due to the distances that they hit the ball because of the stronger lofts. So all it means is I will have to take 1 club less.

I am normally one of the people that give these shops some grief, it is only because they are on a range with a full flight scope system so that I can not only see what the ball does, but see the actual figures also. I did call in Direct Golf the other day, had the usual experience so walked away.

The one thing that I loved was the fact that this lad never asked my handicap, all he was bothered about was seeing me hit a ball. Before anyone comments on this I believe that handicap should not dictate what clubs you should use.

That's some nice sticks you've got there mate. I had the 800 pros but could never get on with them, probably due to the shafts I had fitted in all honesty. They are a good looking club head though.

I believe that the factory turnaround at the moment is 7-10 days. AG orders will take a bit longer due to the way they submit the orders (I believe they submit the order via AG head office, rather than direct from each store.) Should still only be a couple of weeks though.

Did not try the MP64. I called in on Wednesday and took AP2, Rocketbladez TOUR, MP59 and i20. Out of those I liked the RocketBladez TOUR best so booked in for a fitting last night. Got there and was chatting to the fitter and he asked if I had tried the 825 Pro, seeing as I liked the RocketBladez TOUR. So he set one up for me and I tried. Hit a few balls and fell in love with it, so after that was not interested in anything else.

Does not really matter to me anyway as I go away on Wednesday until July. SO they will be ready and waiting the day I get back.

Did not know that there was still an AG in Peterborough. The old one became Nevada bobs then DG. If it is the fitting team from Thorpe wood rebranded as AG then they have always had a good reputation. Will have to give the place a visit.

I have just ordered the same clubs myself, The fitting was good, all three swings with the DNA shaft optimiser were pretty much identical which was pleasing. I've gone for 4-pw, three mp-t4 wedges, and a hybrid. Did you try the hybrid or just the H4's? Cant wait for them to arrive, its only been 4 days.

I do not like hybrids so had no interest in getting them. I was disappointed that they only went down to a 4i. But the fitter talked me into trying the H4 and I loved them.

What's your opinion on the H4's Adey?

I haven't seen any in the local AG and there aren't any at the range.

... Good choice with the wedges BTW

I have been a big critic of AG on here but I am pleased to read the OP and see someone getting a great level of service. Hope the new bats work out for you. I just think it is a shame the level of service seems to vary so much across the country. If they all offered a level like this then I'd be prepared to consider them for my next club purchase but the three stores near me are a long way from this standard
