However what you now find in modern sets is that in the longer clubs not only is the lofting gap less but the club length gapping is also getting less . This is probably down to the fact they consider the longer clubs are getting harder to hit these days with the diminishing loft they now have.
This thread is about higher handicappers and/or shorter hitters not needing the same number of irons in the bag being facilitated with bigger loft gaps between clubs. Can someone sum the thread please ?
Is it just another moan about modern clubs and strengthening of lofts to help players

I think Boomer set that out in the opening post. Why would a higher handicaps not need the same number of irons

You've read it, you sum it.
That is a very good summing up of the need for a summing up.And I was struggling to understand the point made hence asking for someone to sum it up

No it is about the loft difference as you switch irons in the same sets.
At one time it was a standard 5 degrees between one iron and the next, also a half inch difference in shaft length
Equipment develops and moves forward as the years go by and research and development increases to try and find the two holy grails - distance and forgiveness
Strengthening lofts help add forgiveness
But then leave gaps lower down hence people spend money on gap wedges etc
The good thing is there is a set out there for everyone - from the old school blade sets to the ultra forgiving shovels
Go for what you feel is best and what you believe gives you the best results
Holy grails for some, I think they've lessened the game.
But as you say, there are clubs out there for everyone.
That's a poor summing up. Misses the point of the opening post by a long way.Equipment develops and moves forward as the years go by and research and development increases to try and find the two holy grails - distance and forgiveness

Depends what you mean by lessened the game ?
