Texas scramble - is it real golf?

its great fun , until you stand on the 15th tee as a 15 handicap, with 3 drives still to use , and the last two holes have out of bounds on them. with your three ,so called mates, saying you'll be fine , thats pressure matey, best advice use high players drives asap

We normally play a Scramble as a warm up for the main event on our society days, and it's really good fun, low pressure & very sociable too.
I'm going to play a Stringball game in the summer too, always wanted to but have never got around to it yet. Anyone out there ever played a stringball?

I play off 18 so will have 18 feet of string in my bag. If I miss a putt for a four by 6", I just cut 6" off my string & move the ball by that distance, into the hole, pick my ball up and score a four. If I'm 2ft OOB, I cut 2ft off my string & move the ball by that ammount without penalty...............simple.
There is an art to it though!!!! DO NOT walk down the last with loads of string left, conversley, don't use it up too early, you may need it later when your ball is in an unplayable lie & you only need to move it a few inches!
It sounds great fun but have yet to play it, this summer it will be done.

Two words of warning,

NEVER ever tap in your missed 15' putt when your three playing partners are inside you.

ALWAYS get your 'counting' drives [usually four] in early.


Not really proper golf, feelgood stuff for hackers, but still a lot of fun.

I don't mind the scramble format but it depends largely on the draw. In the last one I played on our front nine I had a sprightly old boy of 74 and two ladies. All fine and dandy except none of them hit the ball more than 150 yards. Again not a problem apart from holes 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9 where a good tee shot is imperative to score well and where two tee shots per person were needed. Suffice to say we were playing from parts of the course I doubt many others were using for their second shots and we came nowhere. Still had a good laugh and enjoyed it though

We used to play Texas Scramble once a week to help newcomers to the game ease into the idea of competition play. Friday evenings in the summer and Sunday lunchtimes in the winter and just 9 holes.
They got the idea of marking a card, meeting new people and learnt a lot about the ettiquette and rules. A really relaxed introduction to golf.
Then some pillock joined the club, took over the running of it and changed it to a stableford. :angry:

Yes its real golf and I enjoy the format for social games as its great to mix it up a bit and have some fun with mates but if it came to a straight choice I would go for a medal every time.

I do think that playing games like scramble and better ball can be great for teaching you how to approach a hole better - sometimes you can come off with a far better score than normal in betterball by taking a conservative strategy and its a bit of an eye opener. I have had this discussion with the guy who I play regularly(28 handicapper) and pointed out to him that playing the hole as a par 5 not par 4 has given him the best ever score he has had on it - only for the next round him do exactly what he normally does and try to go for the green in 2 from a place he has 5% chance of making and end up with a double or more.

Swanston runs a friday night texas scramble on their par 3 course in the summer - its a great mix of someone who can hit a ball, a junior who is a demon round the par 3, and two newbies. Its a great way of introducing complete beginners to the game without any pressure.

seems the weather map is on upside down! Its bitter here tho - and winds were very strong, so didnt make for an enjoyable round - but at least we can get out to play!
