Texas scramble handicapping

Ours is 10% of combined with four tee shots to count

We had ours at the weekend with a team consisting of 11, 16, 18,23 the later two being two seniors well into their 70's

We won with a net 59.2 ;)

Just shows it doesn't need to be low cappers to win it

Ours last week was won with a 54.6 (or very close) par 71 by a team where the highest h/c would be about 6.for those who say it's a fun format and should just be played as such, yes I agree, but because of the large take up for these events the prizes can be worth £50 + per player as well as the kudos!

I played in one last night. We got 11.3 shots, which leads to a combined handicap of 113. Wow, that's a lot. My team consisted of three ladies, one off 13, one a high handicap, and one who is total rubbish, but good fun to play with. They also get extra shots as their SS is different, and it's played off the men's card. We hit a 2 under gross, for a net 58.7, and came third. I don't know who won, but one of the teams ahead of us had two cat 1s.

If I could, maybe I would have swapped the worst of the ladies for a cat1, and I think we would have had a good chance of winning! Apart from the handicap, she didn't contribute much, but then it's a fun format, so it's more than just golf.

Thats exactly how my old club did it, 10% of combined. We had a run of 4 years winning the texas scramble comp, with a 4 man combined h/c of around 40, so its not always the low guys who win.

We had ours at the weekend and its 10% combined with 4 tee shots minumum per player (2 spare). I was the lowest handicap on the team with 12 and combined it was 68 (17 19 and 20). We shot a gross 63 so nett 56.2 and would have won if the guy marking the card hadn't done it wrong so we were disqualified!

How can you wrongly mark a Texas Scramble card? Do explain.

only ever play one or two a year and they have been 10%, 2nd last year and won the year before at N Dunbar.

i think you all had to take a number of drives and tee off on a par 3. we got one shot if i remember right.

Played with two formats

Total of the 4 players divided by 4 then adjust to 3/4
10% of the total of the 4 players

The first tended to favour a high handicap group with one good player in it and the second tends to be more even with a slant towards benefiting low handicap groups

We broke with tradition at Hilton Park yesterday. Our three-man teams went out all playing to the lowest man's handicap - in our case 17. That was it. Simple as that. 17 strokes for our team. Seemed to be well received, and gave a lot more teams meaningful hope of a place on the leaderboard. Our 58 was no disgrace but ended up six adrift of the winners.

why bother with handicapping at all if you are only paying lip service to it?

17.17.17 = 17
16. 28.28. = 16

makes no sense at all (to me)

10& of total h/caps. If total h/cap is less than (say) 20 - add (say) 2 shots after 10& calculated. 20 - 30, add 1 shot. Not sure about exact formula but can investigate.

A minimum of 4 tee shots to be taken for each player and, importantly, the player who's tee shot is used cannot play the second shot except on par 3's. Bit more of a level playing field.

Just struck me, how can you have a board comp for a Texas Scramble????

again, this adding of shots makes a compete farce of the actual handicapping so why do it???

adding 2 shots is almost the same as the teams combined handicap if they add to 19, but without swapping a Scr player for a 20 handicapper = result!
