Playing in a Texas scramble. All four players drive off. Drive of player A is selected.

Player A plays his second shot and makes the green 3 feet from the pin. Players B and C play their shots and are way short of the green. Player D plays his second shot and double hits.

Can an the team captain select the second shot by player A or is he obliged to select the third shot of player D?

This actually happend and struck me as being very similar to the situation where the four players go for the short put and the first player misses by inches and then absent mindedly holes out.

I'd suggest the captain can pick whichever ball he wants. The double hit is only one stroke (plus a penalty stroke). However, whether the penalty stroke is added to the team score - dunno.

To clarify. the double hit shot of player D is the worst of the 4 and is 100 yards short of the green.

The team is perfectly entitled to choose whichever of the 4 shots they wish. You can discount all 3 other shots - no matter the outcome - when a choice has been made. If one of the 4 players stuffed his ball OOB or in a water hazard, would you think of choosing it?

My point is this, is the second shot of the double hit the third shot of the team? Your closing question seems to miss the point entirely.

As backwoodsman has already posted (accurately ) player D has only played 1 stroke - that shot was subject to penalty because he struck the ball more than once, but it's still one stroke.

At which point you go forward with rosecott answer.

The double hit is a penalty on player D's stroke only ,NOT a stroke, if they choose a different ball then player D's shot , along with the penalty are discounted and never heard of again

unless the other 3 hiked it OOB or into water , just play any of the other ball . pen is irrelevant

EDIT or as Duncan said .. no counting involved Duncan , you were quicker :D

Player D has played 2 plus 1 penalty = 3, Player A has played 2 with a 3 footer left.

So why would anyone choose player D's ball unless he holed it.
