Exactly how detached are UK players from the people with whom they're playing?
How is it possible for players from the same group to hit from the wrong tees?
I'm clearly missing something.
Happened to me once about 20 years ago in a medal. We were just blethering and hit from the yellow tee rather than walking back to the medal tee.

Maybe I'm reading the OP wrongly, but my reading is that a two shot penalty is unduly harsh, not that there should be no penalty.
I miust have been misled by Wrong tee penalty should be removed in the tile and Is it time that the two shot penalty for playing from the wrong tee should now be removed? in the first sentence or So time to delete it? in the last. The discussion must have shifted at some point.

Unintentionally moving your marker was it ?
Nope.

Pre 2019, under old Rule 20-1, there was no penalty if a ball or ball marker was accidentally moved in the process of lifting the ball under a Rule or marking its position provided the movement of the ball or ball marker was directly attributable to the specific act of marking the position of, or lifting, the ball.

Was it accidentally moved when NOT in specific act of marking it or lifting it then ? But even this is a perfect example, nobody knew the rule or applied it consistently. So they removed it to avoid silly penalties, and, people not following the rule.

Also accidentally moving a ball on a putting green was changed to no penalty in 2017.

So is your argument now boiling down to: "Nobody knows the Rules or the penalties so don't have any."?

Happens quite often at our club - Monday the Senior gents play all competitions from yellow markers - Wednesday and Saturdays is from White tees.
When I played my first Monday I played yellows all the way round but had brain fade on 18 - cost me 2 shots.
I’ve also saved the group ahead on a Wednesday who’d all played off the yellows on the 9th!

Well, you have played an intentional shot from the wrong place.....same as being in front of the tee box.
There has to be some sort of penalty
Why? It's not going to count for anything as you did it wrong by mistake. No advantage, all you've done is waste energy.

You've just had a mulligan, seen how the wind is affecting your ball, seeing if you can carry that bunker, picked up a swing fault...
The rule is that you play from the teeing area - between the markers and 2 club lengths back..outside that it's a foul..otherwise you're letting people play from anywhere.

Not really, because it's not in play, they have to do it again from the right tee.

I think maybe it should be no penalty but the original hit counts, so ultimately you're hitting 2 off the tee. Just like how we discussed previously about hitting one out of bounds. Would be a fairer penalty.

I did this last week in the November medal (Only my 3rd comp at the club), level par for the first 6 holes , and hit an arrow straight drive down the difficult 7th. As I put the club in the bag and turned round, I said to my playing partners, "I think I've just played off the wrong tee.", Both sets were together just 2 clubs in front of the other. I played 3 off the correct tee. To make matters worse I lost out on countback for the win.

It's was totally my fault, the guys I play with midweek always play from the Yellows, and sub consciously just went to the yellows. I'm happy with a 2 shot penalty, but I think with easing of some of the rules in recent years and the leniency of the rules around the teeing area (knocking the ball of the tee etc..) I do think this rule could be relaxed to a 1 shot penalty, ie re-hit counting 2

Especially as, if you did it the other way round and accidentally played off the whites when it should have been yellows, you would have been fine if they really were just two club-lengths apart.
